Born on July 31, 1923, in Pennsylvania, USA, Stephanie Kwolek initially aspired to pursue medicine. However, she shifted her focus to applied chemistry, which offered the opportunity to create cutting-edge materials. She joined DuPont in 1946, a company renowned for its advancements in polymer science.

In 1965, while working on a project to develop stronger, lighter fibers for automotive tires, Kwolek stumbled upon a material with exceptional strength and durability. This discovery, which started as a routine effort to improve tire efficiency, led to the creation of Kevlar—one of the most significant breakthroughs in industrial chemistry.
