Evolved GR Yaris Gets WRC Driver-Supervised Special Editions

30 Jan 2024
  • With only 100 units of each special edition available through a lottery system, how does Toyota plan to ensure a fair and inclusive process for potential buyers?
  • How do these modes enhance the performance and adaptability of the vehicles, and what role do they play in elevating the driving experience across various terrains?

In a spectacular world premiere at the Rallye Monte Carlo, Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) unveiled two extraordinary special editions of the evolved GR Yaris - the GR Yaris RZ "High performance・Sébastien Ogier Edition" (Ogier Edition) and the GR Yaris RZ "High performance・Kalle Rovanperä Edition" (Rovanperä Edition). These limited-edition models, based on the highly acclaimed GR Yaris, were introduced as a tribute to the remarkable achievements of TGR-WRT drivers Sébastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanperä, who have left an indelible mark on the World Rally Championship (WRC).

Sébastien Ogier, an eight-time WRC drivers' title winner, and Kalle Rovanperä, who secured consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023, were directly involved in supervising the development of these special editions. The inspiration behind these unique vehicles comes from the vision of Toyota's Chairman Akio Toyoda, affectionately known as Morizo. Morizo aimed to express his profound respect and gratitude to the drivers, teams, organizers, and fans who contribute to the world of rallying. Limited to just 100 units each, the Ogier Edition and Rovanperä Edition will be available through a lottery system at GR Garage locations nationwide in Japan, starting in the spring. Alongside the exclusive nature of these vehicles, purchasers will have the opportunity to participate in special-experience programs related to TGR-WRT. This initiative is designed to immerse the lucky owners in the excitement of the WRC and forge a closer connection with the world of rallying.

Vehicle Features

1. Unique 4WD Control Modes

The special editions boast new 4WD control modes, replacing the standard GR Yaris' "GRAVEL" and "TRACK" modes. These modes have been specifically developed for the Ogier and Rovanperä Editions, enhancing their performance and adaptability across various terrains.

2. Aerodynamic Enhancements

The Ogier Edition features a newly developed lightweight rally spoiler crafted from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). On the other hand, the Rovanperä Edition incorporates the same variable-wing CFRP rear spoiler found on the GRMN Yaris, improving aerodynamic characteristics and performance.

3. Striking Exterior Designs

The Ogier Edition is presented in a distinctive "Matte Stealth Gray" matte color, exuding a sense of sophistication and stealth. The Rovanperä Edition, inspired by the designer of Rovanperä's rally helmet, features a three-tone paint scheme applied with meticulous attention to detail, highlighting the prowess of painting without the use of car wrap or other colored adhesive sheets.

4. WRC Victory Commemoratives

Both editions proudly bear WRC victory commemorative decals on the left and right front fenders, celebrating the drivers' triumphs in the WRC drivers' title.

5. Personalized Interior Touches

The steering wheel stitch color is carefully chosen to match the national flag colors of each driver's home country - France for Ogier and Finland for Rovanperä. Additionally, an exclusive plate commemorating TGR's WRC victories graces the instrument panel in front of the passenger seat, adding a touch of prestige to the interior.

In summary, the GR Yaris RZ "High performance・Sébastien Ogier Edition" and the GR Yaris RZ "High performance・Kalle Rovanperä Edition" are not just vehicles; they are a testament to Toyota's commitment to the world of rallying and a tribute to the exceptional drivers who have fueled the brand's success on the WRC stage. These limited editions seamlessly blend high-performance engineering with personalized touches, offering lucky owners a rare opportunity to own a piece of rallying history.

The BMW Skytop Concept: A Fusion of Classic Inspiration and Modern Design

BMW has once again captivated the automotive world with its latest reveal at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. This year, the German automaker unveiled the Skytop Concept, a stunning two-seater coupe that blends contemporary performance with nostalgic design cues. Despite BMW's assertions that the Skytop draws heavily from past icons like the Z8 and the 503, many see it as a reimagined 8 Series with a targa top.

Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, describes the Skytop Concept as "a truly unique and exotic design, in the tradition of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este." He emphasizes that it combines "driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level," akin to its historic predecessors. The parallels to the Z8 roadster are undeniable; the Skytop features thin taillights and a distinctive sharknose front end reminiscent of the early 2000s Z8. Furthermore, the sculpted hood, compact headlights, and unique flat-decked rear are clear nods to the 1950s BMW 503.
