Maintaining a spotless car isn't just about appearances, it's about pride, protection, and performance. With modern detailing techniques and product choices, achieving a pro-level shine at home is now within reach. From pre-wash essentials to engine bay detailing, expert Adam Eaton from Gtechniq shares insider tips on how to elevate your car cleaning routine to professional standards.

Pre-Wash Like a Pro

Before diving into cleaning, preparation is everything. Avoid washing in direct sunlight or extreme heat, as this can reduce product effectiveness and cause streaks. Begin with a thorough rinse or a snow foam treatment to remove loose dirt. Adam Eaton stresses the importance of this pre-wash phase: “The whole point is that before we put our hands on the car, we clear as much dirt and grime to ensure that nothing gets dragged along the paint.” If you’re using a pressure washer, always maintain a safe distance to avoid harming the finish. Citrus-infused foams can break down stubborn grime more effectively, giving you a clean slate before touching the bodywork.

The Two-Bucket Rule

The Two-Bucket Rule

Protect the Paint with Proper Tools

One bucket isn’t enough. Experts recommend a two-bucket system – one for soapy water and another for rinsing the mitt. Each should have a grit guard to trap dirt and prevent scratches. Using a wash mitt instead of a sponge further reduces the risk of damage. Eaton advises moving the mitt in straight lines, not circular motions, and rinsing it frequently. This minimizes the risk of rubbing particles into the paint and keeps the surface swirl-free. Investing in triple-layer microfiber towels for drying also ensures a spotless, streak-free finish.

Go Beyond the Surface

Detail Every Inch Inside and Out

Pro-level car cleaning isn’t just about the exterior. Skip silicone sprays inside the cabin – they may look shiny, but can create glare and slippery surfaces. Instead, focus on safe interior cleaners. For the engine bay, clean gently and apply silicone-based sprays only to cables, followed by re-greasing moving parts. Don’t neglect the wheels – clean one at a time using alloy-safe cleaners and multiple brushes. For crystal-clear glass, use two microfiber cloths: one for cleaning and another for buffing. And for a truly smooth finish, try a clay bar to remove bonded contaminants. If you’re chasing perfection, consider using a depth gauge and machine polish to remove deeper imperfections professionally.
