2026 Mercedes AMG GLC 53 Brings Back the Six Cylinder Roar

  • How is the 2026 GLC 53 engine different from past AMG models?
  • Why did Mercedes bring back the six cylinder instead of going full electric?

Mercedes AMG has finally answered the call of performance fans by reintroducing a proper six cylinder engine in the new 2026 GLC 53. After years of controversy over downsized four cylinder AMG models, the return of the inline six signals a bold course correction for the brand. Blending classic muscle with cutting edge hybrid tech, the GLC 53 Coupe and SUV editions are here to reclaim their place in the premium performance SUV arena.

Under the hood lies a heavily revised 3.0 liter turbocharged inline six engine known as the M256M. This new powerplant delivers 600 newton meters of torque, a 41 newton meter bump over its sibling in the CLE 53. It gets a new cylinder head and modified intake camshaft for sharper response. Thanks to a high flow intake and new cooling system, the engine can briefly jump to 640 newton meters for 10 seconds using the Overboost function. This is not just about more power, but smarter power delivery.

Paired with a smooth shifting 9 speed automatic gearbox and a clever 4MATIC Plus all wheel drive system, the GLC 53 sprints from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.1 seconds. Opt for the AMG Dynamic Plus Package and you unlock a top speed of 270 kilometers per hour. A newly tuned exhaust with custom valves brings back the aggressive, throaty soundtrack that AMG fans missed.

While much of the industry races toward full electrification, Mercedes is taking a more balanced approach in 2026. The GLC 53 reflects that strategy, mixing performance with practicality and acknowledging that not all markets are ready for full EV adoption. Rear axle steering comes standard, pivoting up to 2.5 degrees opposite the front wheels at low speeds for sharper cornering, and 0.7 degrees in the same direction at higher speeds for stability.

For the first time ever in a crossover, AMG also offers a Drift Mode as an option. This unlocks tail happy performance thanks to the electronic limited slip differential and torque shifting 4MATIC Plus system.

With rivals like the BMW M350 and Audi S5 in sight, Mercedes is going all in with a package that blends efficiency, drama, and daily usability. The 2026 GLC 53 is expected to land between 69,000 and 88,000 US dollars, targeting a wide range of buyers who want more than just electric silence.
