The luxury off road SUV market is entering a new era. What was once a niche world ruled by the Mercedes G Class and Land Rover Defender is now exploding with new choices. Fresh faces like the Ford Bronco, GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1S have made big waves, but now Audi and BMW are preparing to bring their own premium challengers. With advanced electrification, bold design, and true off road capabilities, the stage is set for a fierce rivalry in the high end SUV space.

Audi has been teasing fans with the idea of a serious off road SUV for years, but things got real in 2025 with the reveal of the Q6 e tron Off Road concept. The striking look had some people questioning if it was AI generated, but the production version will focus more on practicality and real world capability.

According to industry reports, Audi’s upcoming SUV will share much of its core engineering with the Scout Terra and Traveler models planned for 2027 under the Volkswagen Group. This means it will likely offer a fully electric platform or a range extender setup for extra flexibility. Expect upgrades in power and off road features compared to the more mainstream Scout models, and a launch targeted for 2030. Audi’s move positions it to go head to head with the G Class and Defender, offering a blend of luxury, technology, and adventure.

BMW is not sitting on the sidelines either. The German automaker is working on its own answer to the G Class, known for now as Project G74. While BMW might not have the rally history of Audi, its engineering expertise means the new SUV is expected to be a serious contender on any trail.

Early details point to the use of the CLAR platform from the X5, with major tweaks for off road strength and durability. BMW is rumored to be planning both internal combustion and hybrid versions to satisfy global demand, especially after the all electric G580 failed to gain traction. There is also talk of a dedicated electric version for the Chinese market, where demand for battery powered off roaders is growing fast.

As the luxury SUV world gets ready for a major shake up, Audi and BMW are set to offer alternatives that could change the segment for good. From cutting edge electric systems to versatile hybrid options, these new models promise to deliver both premium comfort and rugged adventure, challenging Mercedes in its own backyard.
