Audi R8: The Legendary Supercar Could Return with Lamborghini DNA

10 Mar 2025
  • What will power the next-generation Audi R8?
  • How will the next R8 stand apart from its Lamborghini twin?

Audi’s legendary R8 supercar is reportedly making a grand return in 2027, and this time, it could be more powerful than ever. After discontinuing the second-generation R8 in 2023, Audi seemed poised to replace it with a fully electric model. However, recent reports suggest that the German automaker is instead developing a plug-in hybrid R8, borrowing technology from the Lamborghini Temerario. If true, this would mark a thrilling evolution for the R8, blending hybrid performance with a design tailored for both track dominance and everyday usability.

The next R8 will reportedly share its platform, drivetrain, and chassis with the Lamborghini Temerario, an upcoming plug-in hybrid supercar. Given Audi’s history of collaborating with Lamborghini the original R8 was based on the Gallardo, while the second-generation shared much with the Huracán. This move follows a familiar path. Engineering for the next R8 is already underway, with Audi aiming to craft its fastest and most powerful road-legal car yet.

At the heart of the Temerario lies a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine producing 789 horsepower and 730 Nm of torque. This engine pairs with three electric motors, two driving the front wheels and one integrated into the gearbox, resulting in a staggering total output of 907 horsepower and 800 Nm. A compact 3.8-kWh battery allows for short electric-only drives, optimizing efficiency without compromising performance.

Despite these impressive numbers, Audi might push the new R8 even further. By the time it arrives in 2027, Lamborghini is expected to have developed even more powerful variants of the Temerario, meaning the R8 could approach the 1000-horsepower mark. Such an output would allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under three seconds, with a top speed exceeding 320 km/h.

Design and Purpose

Design and Purpose

While the next R8 will share its mechanical foundation with the Lamborghini Temerario, Audi is expected to fine-tune the design and driving dynamics to align with its brand identity. Unlike Lamborghini’s aggressive and track-focused approach, Audi will likely refine the R8 to deliver a balance of performance and daily usability. Comfort, advanced technology, and a more understated yet aerodynamic design will set it apart from its Italian counterpart.

The new R8 is expected to debut in both coupe and convertible versions, following the model’s traditional lineup. There are also rumors that Audi may use the “e-tron” badge, reinforcing its commitment to electrification even as it embraces hybrid technology. Beyond road use, the R8 will likely play a role in endurance racing, potentially forming the foundation for future FIA-homologated race cars competing in prestigious events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

As Audi prepares for a new era of performance, the return of the R8 signals a strategic shift combining electrified efficiency with the raw power and excitement that made it an icon in the first place. With engineering efforts already in motion, the countdown to 2027 begins, and the next-generation R8 is shaping up to be Audi’s most formidable supercar yet.
