As the automotive industry accelerates toward a fully electric future, several well-known gas-powered models are heading for retirement. Brands like Audi, Cadillac, Ford, Mercedes, Nissan, and Jeep are taking bold steps to reshape their lineups ahead of 2026. Whether it is due to tighter emissions regulations, low sales, or a pivot toward EVs, these changes mark the end of an era for many popular nameplates. Here are the models that will no longer be part of the road ahead.

Audi Steps Back to Move Forward

Audi is making major changes to its lineup to prepare for a fully electric future. The A7 will be dropped by 2026 as the company focuses on a simplified lineup built around the A5 and A6, both set to go electric. The A4 in its gas-powered form will disappear after 2025 but is expected to return as an all-electric model. Meanwhile, the S7 will also retire, leaving only the high-performance RS7 Performance as the sole survivor in the lineup. These moves align with Audi’s commitment to cut down overlap and push EV innovation.

Cadillac Clears the Stage for Electric SUVs

Cadillac is stepping away from several of its combustion-engine SUVs to make room for its growing electric ambitions. The XT4 has officially ended production in 2025, with its manufacturing line being retooled to build the next-gen Chevrolet Bolt. The three-row XT6 will exit the American market at the end of 2025 due to low sales, which did not exceed 20,000 units in 2024. While the XT4, XT5, and XT6 will still be available in China, Saudi customers should expect a greater focus on electric alternatives like the Escalade IQ.

Ford and Jeep Shift Gears

Ford is adjusting its lineup in response to tougher emissions regulations across several US states. The Escape (known in some markets as Kuga) will be restricted from sale in states like California and New York, leading to a partial phase-out despite selling 146,000 units in 2024. Meanwhile, Jeep has officially dropped the Wagoneer name. Going forward, only the Grand Wagoneer and the all-electric Wagoneer S will carry the brand’s premium large SUV identity. These changes reflect a growing industry trend toward simplifying model names and focusing on electrified platforms.

Mercedes-Benz is scaling back its SUV range. The EQB electric SUV will exit global markets before 2026 due to weak sales since its 2021 launch. Additionally, both the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe will be retired by the end of 2025, likely to be replaced by a more efficient single model that reduces overlap and manufacturing cost. Nissan is also undergoing a major shakeup. The long-standing Altima sedan will end after more than three decades in production. The Ariya, Nissan’s futuristic electric SUV, is also being discontinued in the US after only three years due to slow sales and high production costs. Lastly, the Versa, one of the most affordable sedans on the American market, is expected to be dropped despite strong 2024 sales, as consumers shift toward crossovers and larger vehicles.
