The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is rewriting what it means to be a true American supercar. After a string of headline making achievements, the 2026 ZR1 just broke the production car lap record at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, adding one more victory to its long list of accomplishments and showing the world it can take on the most elite names in motorsport.
Legendary Canadian racer Ron Fellows drove the ZR1 to a stunning time of 1 minute 18.2 seconds, breaking the previous record of 1 minute 22.12 seconds, which he had set in a Corvette Z06 back in 2023. This huge time gap highlights just how much of a leap forward the ZR1 represents compared to its older sibling.
Fellows is no stranger to either the track or the Corvette name. As part owner of Canadian Tire Motorsports Park and one of the most successful Corvette drivers in racing history, he knows every corner and straight. His expertise behind the wheel ensured that every bit of the ZR1’s potential was used, especially on a circuit he knows so well.
At the heart of the ZR1 is a mid mounted 5.5 liter twin turbo V8 pumping out an incredible 1,064 horsepower. This power launches the car from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 2.3 seconds, putting it right up there with the fastest supercars on the planet.
But raw power alone is not enough for record breaking laps. The optional ZTK package delivers massive downforce with up to 545 kilograms of aerodynamic grip. Fellows confirmed that this setup let him corner at much higher speeds, especially through the tricky eighth turn where the ZR1 was more than 32 kilometers per hour faster than the Z06.
These numbers are not just impressive on paper. The ZR1 has also set records at famous circuits like Watkins Glen, Road America, Road Atlanta, and both layouts at Virginia International Raceway. The even more extreme ZR1X version also conquered the Nürburgring in Germany, underscoring the car’s global credentials. The record setting car was part of the new Stars and Steel collection, fueling speculation about a limited edition release in 2026.
With Ron Fellows behind the wheel, the ZR1 continues to prove it is not just a fast car, but a true track machine that earns its place among the legends.
