Audi’s iconic five cylinder engine is back, but not where fans expected. Instead of showing up in a new Golf R, the legendary 2.5 liter turbocharged unit makes its return in a limited edition version of the Cupra Formentor VZ5. With fewer units, added exclusivity, and a slightly different performance twist, this unexpected launch signals a surprising new chapter for one of the most celebrated performance engines in the Volkswagen Group lineup.
The new Cupra VZ5 comes with the same 2.5 liter TFSI engine found in the Audi RS3, but with slightly reduced power. While the RS3 delivers 394 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, the VZ5 is tuned to 385 horsepower and 480 Nm. Even with this small drop, the VZ5 still ranks as one of the most powerful cars Cupra has ever made.
It pairs the engine with a seven speed dual clutch transmission and an advanced all wheel drive system developed in house. Unlike Audi’s classic Quattro setup, this one is tweaked specifically for Cupra’s unique dynamics. The VZ5 is expected to hit 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.2 seconds and will be limited to a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour.
Only 4,000 units of the new VZ5 will be built, compared to 7,000 in the first run, adding more rarity to its badge. For the first time, Cupra is also offering a right hand drive version, opening up markets like the UK and Australia.
Visually, the car keeps its signature copper stacked exhausts, bold 20 inch wheels, and aggressive styling that blends performance with Spanish flair. While pricing is not officially announced yet, expectations in Spain put the starting price around 60,000 euros, which still undercuts the Audi RS3 that sells for over 85,000 euros.
Despite high fan demand, Volkswagen has not confirmed any plans to launch a Golf R with the five cylinder engine. With the 2.5 TFSI not compliant with upcoming Euro 7 emission regulations set for November 2026, the clock is ticking on any such opportunity.
As the TT RS retires and the RS Q3 disappears from the lineup, only the RS3 continues to carry this engine forward. The Cupra VZ5 might be one of the final chapters in this engine’s legendary story before full electrification takes over.
