FORMULA E COMES TO ROME

17 Jul 2023

From Friday 14 to Sunday 16 July, rounds 13 and 14 of the racing series dedicated to all-electric cars will take place in Rome, which welcomes the penultimate event of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, now in the closing stages of Season 9.

Already the setting for pitched battles on the Circuito cittadino dell’EUR in the last four seasons, the eternal city is the only Italian stage in this season's calendar. For the first time, the two single-seaters from the Maserati MSG Racing team will line up on the Italian grid, with drivers Maximilian Günther and Edoardo Mortara flying the flag for the Trident.

The 2023 Hankook Rome E-Prix

The 2023 Hankook Rome E-Prix is one of the most hotly anticipated races among fans and drivers alike; from the early afternoon on Friday, the visors will be down for a gruelling and exhilarating contest. One of this season's longest circuits, it is designed around the imposing, early 20th century monuments in the EUR district, most notably the iconic Colosseo quadrato.

After delivering excellent performances in the Berlin and Jakarta stages – with two podium placings and a historic victory in Indonesia – and having picked up points in Portland, Maserati is seeking further success in its home race. In the meantime, it is getting ready to turn heads off the track with a series of activities scheduled over the weekend.

After the pre-event round table aimed at exploring the transfer of technology from the racetrack to the road – where Formula E is a benchmark platform for the development of next-generation production cars – on Saturday and Sunday invited journalists will be taken on exclusive hot laps aboard the GranTurismo Folgore, the extraordinarily high-performance coupé with 800-volt technology, for a unique and hair-raising experience along the same roads contested by drivers in the highest category of electric motorsport.

The word on everybody's lips at the event in Rome will therefore be Folgore, which means “lightning” and has come to symbolise Maserati's future production. In addition to being the name of the Trident brand’s speedy GEN3 single-seater, it also identifies the entire all-electric range, with the GranTurismo Folgore and Grecale Folgore being the first fully electric models from the Modena-based automaker.

On Friday evening, a light show will be staged to coincide with the Italian round of this season's Formula E Championship, featuring video projections and mapping on the façade of the Palazzo dei Congressi. At the foot of this imposing building, Maserati will be showcasing a Grecale Folgore, the icon of comfort in e-mobility, alongside the GranTurismo One-Off Luce, a statement of innovation and sustainability with its Folgore all-electric motor. Last but not least will be the Maserati Tipo Folgore GEN3 single-seater, providing an up-close glimpse of the car that will battle it out on the streets of Rome this weekend.

During the home stage, a tribute to the year of Maserati’s electrification will feature on the helmets of the Trident team's two drivers, which are customised in the same Rame Folgore colour as the brand’s all-electric coupé and SUV, a detail which is sure to delight enthusiasts of the brand that epitomises luxury on four wheels.

Fans of the Trident brand will also be able to enjoy the 2023 Hankook Rome E-Prix from a stand dedicated to them, together with some of the brand’s employees from Modena, who will be taking part in the home stage to support Maserati in its first Formula E race on Italian soil.

Formula E and the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) have today revealed the next generation of race car, the new all-electric GEN3 Evo, capable of 0-60mph in 1.82s.

Leveraging a roster of innovative technical upgrades, the GEN3 Evo unveiled at H.S.H Prince Albert II’s Private Car Collection will debut in Season 11 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship where some of the world’s greatest manufacturers and drivers race wheel-to-wheel in iconic locations around the globe.

Developed by specialists from Formula E and the FIA, the latest GEN3 Evo edition marks a significant leap in electric racing technology, with acceleration 0-60mph 30% faster than a current F1 car, and 36% faster than the GEN3 car.

Capable of accelerating nearly a full second faster than its predecessor – the GEN3 – that was the world’s first race car designed for street racing, it sets an even higher standard in performance, sustainability, and efficiency. The GEN3 Evo serves as a formidable ambassador for the future of motorsport, embodying cutting-edge advancements and a commitment to environmental responsibility.

New Aston Martin Vantage GT3 targets victory in WEC and IMSA

Aston Martin’s new Vantage GT3 continues its hunt for glory in the world’s two most prestigious endurance racing series, as the FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship [IMSA] resume this weekend.

The WEC begins its European leg on Sunday with the 6 Hours of Imola (ITA), and an inaugural visit to one of the continent’s best-known circuits, before heading to Spa-Francorchamps (BEL) on 11 May, and then the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 15-16 June. Meanwhile IMSA heads to the world famous Long Beach street track for its first sprint race (100 minutes) of the season. A second-place finish in the brand-new LMGT3 class for the Heart of Racing (HoR), and third for D’station Racing, made Aston Martin the only one of the nine GT manufacturers present to score a WEC double podium finish at the season-opening 1812km of Qatar in March. It means both teams arrive in Italy in strong form.
