The world of rare cars just saw something wild in Las Vegas. The very first Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1 LM, a supercar no one has even driven yet, sold for over twenty million dollars at auction. That is a new record for any brand new car, especially one that has not even left the factory floor.
This is not just any auction win. The successful bidder will help design their own car alongside Gordon Murray himself. The owner will take part in special sit down sessions with the legendary engineer to choose specs and finishes, and even get behind the scenes at development test drives. Indy 500 legend Dario Franchitti will also join these exclusive engineering days, giving the experience a racing pedigree few can match.
The perks do not stop there. Owners receive a massive five hundred page book that chronicles the entire creation of their car, filled with original drawings and notes from Murray’s personal notebooks. Only five S1 LMs will ever be made, making this not just a car, but a true collector’s journey.
It is easy to see why collectors are excited about the S1 LM. The design pays tribute to the iconic McLaren F1 GTR that won Le Mans in 1995, but underneath, this car uses a heavily upgraded T.50 as its base. The beating heart is a 4.3 liter V12 engine that sends seven hundred ten horsepower through a six speed manual transmission straight to the rear wheels. The driver sits in a central seat with two passenger seats slightly behind on each side, just like the McLaren F1.
Noise lovers are in for a treat, too. This V12 is loud enough that you may need headphones to drive. Add to that the ultra rare production run and a backstory filled with engineering legends, and it is no wonder the S1 LM has already set records before it has even turned a wheel.
