Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Takes on Pikes Peak

14 Apr 2024
  • What key safety modifications and performance enhancements are Hyundai implementing in the Ioniq 5 N for its ambitious Pikes Peak challenge?

In a bold move that highlights the evolving landscape of electric vehicle (EV) performance, Hyundai has announced its entry into this year's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with the highly anticipated Ioniq 5 N. This venture marks a significant milestone in showcasing the potential of electric power in motorsport, as Hyundai aims to push the boundaries of what is achievable with their cutting-edge EV technology.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, now in its 102nd year, is renowned for its challenging course that spans 12.42 miles and includes a staggering 156 turns, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Colorado Rockies. This event has become a proving ground for automotive excellence, attracting top-tier manufacturers and talented drivers from around the globe.

Electrifying Innovation at Pikes Peak

Hyundai's approach with the Ioniq 5 N is a blend of innovation and purposeful modification. Unlike conventional racing setups, the Ioniq 5 Ns destined for Pikes Peak will shed their rear seats to accommodate a critical safety feature: a robust roll cage. This alteration underscores Hyundai's commitment to driver safety in extreme conditions, a necessary precaution given the demanding nature of the hill climb.

Further enhancements include the installation of specialized racing equipment within the cabin. The driver will be secured in a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat, complete with a six-point Sabelt racing harness designed to provide optimal support and protection. A comprehensive fire suppression system adds an additional layer of safety, highlighting the meticulous preparation that goes into competing at such a high-stakes event.

Under the hood, the Ioniq 5 N retains its impressive dual-motor setup, capable of generating up to 641 horsepower during peak performance. This formidable power translates to a blistering 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of just 3.25 seconds, firmly establishing the Ioniq 5 N as a force to be reckoned with on the ascent to Pikes Peak.

Hyundai has enlisted a talented roster of drivers for this ambitious endeavor. Eleven-time Pikes Peak winner Paul Dallenbach will lead the charge in one of the "stock" Ioniq 5 Ns, while rookie Ron Zaras, a former Hoonigan executive, will make his debut on the iconic course. The team will also include seasoned professionals like WRC driver Dani Sordo and Pikes Peak legend Robin Shute, further amplifying the caliber of Hyundai's assault on the hill climb.

While the current outright record at Pikes Peak stands at an impressive 7 minutes and 57.148 seconds, achieved by Romain Dumas in a purpose-built electric race car, Hyundai's primary focus remains on showcasing the Ioniq 5 N's capabilities and setting a new benchmark within the electric production SUV/crossover category.

As Hyundai prepares to make history at Pikes Peak, enthusiasts and industry observers alike eagerly anticipate the performance of these electrifying contenders. With innovation, determination, and a steadfast commitment to excellence, Hyundai is poised to redefine the boundaries of electric vehicle performance on one of motorsport's most challenging stages. The 102nd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb promises to be an electrifying chapter in automotive history.

New Aston Martin Vantage GT3 targets victory in WEC and IMSA

Aston Martin’s new Vantage GT3 continues its hunt for glory in the world’s two most prestigious endurance racing series, as the FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship [IMSA] resume this weekend.

The WEC begins its European leg on Sunday with the 6 Hours of Imola (ITA), and an inaugural visit to one of the continent’s best-known circuits, before heading to Spa-Francorchamps (BEL) on 11 May, and then the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 15-16 June. Meanwhile IMSA heads to the world famous Long Beach street track for its first sprint race (100 minutes) of the season. A second-place finish in the brand-new LMGT3 class for the Heart of Racing (HoR), and third for D’station Racing, made Aston Martin the only one of the nine GT manufacturers present to score a WEC double podium finish at the season-opening 1812km of Qatar in March. It means both teams arrive in Italy in strong form.
