Hyundai's Bold Move: Upgrading the Elantra N with a Bigger Engine

30 Nov 2023
  • Was it confirmed that the Elantra N might have a bigger engine?
  • What are the specifications of the new Elantra N?

Hyundai is gearing up for the next chapter in the Elantra N's high-performance saga, and it looks like the automaker is planning to give enthusiasts even more to be excited about. Fresh off the debut of the updated Elantra N with its restyled features and weight loss, Hyundai is already eyeing a bigger engine for the next generation of this sporty sedan.

Nearly a year ago, Hyundai teased the automotive world with the promise of a new gasoline-powered N version, and now, in an interview with CarExpert, Albert Biermann, Hyundai's Executive Technical Advisor, has hinted at something even more powerful under the hood. According to Biermann, plans are in motion to equip the next Elantra N with a larger 2.5-liter turbocharged engine.

Biermann's Confirmation

In the interview, Biermann confidently stated, "Before I left Namyang, I made sure the Elantra can go on with the 2.5 turbo. It fits in there and everything. Australia is safe, the U.S. is safe, but someone needs to make a decision, right? And markets other than Australia, forget them. They're all dreaming of the EV cloud, EV heaven, they don't care for combustion cars."

This bold statement from Hyundai's Executive Technical Advisor suggests a clear direction for the Elantra N's future: a bigger engine that promises an enhanced driving experience for enthusiasts in key markets.

To put things into perspective, the current Elantra N boasts a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine generating 276 horsepower and 390 Nm of torque. The proposed 2.5-liter unit, which has proven its capabilities in the Sonata N Line and the 2024 Genesis G70, could take the Elantra N's performance to new heights. With 290 horsepower and 421 Nm of torque in the Sonata N Line, and even more in the Genesis G70, the Elantra N's potential power boost is undoubtedly an exciting prospect for performance enthusiasts.

Hyundai's move to consider a larger engine for the Elantra N aligns with the brand's commitment to delivering thrilling driving experiences. As the automotive industry shifts towards electric vehicles, this decision reinforces Hyundai's dedication to the combustion engine, catering to those who still appreciate the raw power and exhilaration that traditional internal combustion engines provide.

The Hyundai Elantra N has already proven itself as a force to be reckoned with in the high-performance sedan segment, and now, with plans for a bigger engine in the works, it's poised to set a new standard for enthusiasts. As Hyundai continues to push the boundaries of performance and innovation, the next generation of the Elantra N is shaping up to be a powerhouse that will undoubtedly turn heads and ignite the passion of driving purists around the globe.
