Mercedes Baby G Class Is Shaping Up Like A Real Off Road SUV

26 Feb 2026
  • What will the Baby G Class look like and how rugged will it be?
  • What do we know about the platform, power, timing, and price

Mercedes is not just stretching the G Wagon family, it is shrinking it too. The upcoming smaller G Class, often called the Baby G, aims to keep the tough image and trail ready attitude of the full size icon while making the package easier to live with day to day. Early talk pointed to an EV only setup, but newer updates suggest Mercedes is also considering a hybrid option in key markets. Add in a body on frame structure and the brand is clearly trying to sell this as a legit off road sibling, not a city only look alike.

Smaller G Class, Same Attitude

Expect Mercedes to mirror the signature G Class shape, just scaled down. Plan to see the familiar boxy vibe, upright stance, and the kind of details that make it instantly recognizable. Focus on rugged design cues should show up through heavy use of protective cladding around areas like the lower front, wheel arches, and rear bumper. Keep the off road theme going by offering proper tires and hardware that supports trail use, such as skid plates, tow hooks, and possibly brush guard style protection. Even renderings and rumors point to EV specific touches for the electric version, but the overall goal stays the same: keep the mini G looking and feeling like a real member of the G Class family.

Go old school where it counts by using a body on frame chassis, which Mercedes leadership has described as a completely new development with many unique components. Choose that architecture and it becomes easier to take the off road promise seriously, since it is the same basic recipe used by the regular G Class. Expect short overhangs that help on approach and departure angles, while the smaller size could bring limits from a lower ride height and shorter wheelbase compared with the full size model. On the EV side, rumors suggest 800 volt charging capability and a range target a bit above 300 miles, with all wheel drive as the obvious default. On the hybrid side, expect a setup related to the CLA, pairing a turbocharged 1.5 liter four cylinder with an electric motor integrated into an eight speed dual clutch automatic, with output figures mentioned up to 188 horsepower and 221 pound feet of torque. Watch for a debut later this year as prototypes are already being tested on public roads, then look toward production and sales timing in 2027. For pricing, early estimates put it around 55,000 to 65,000 dollars, though it could land higher once final specs and trims are confirmed.
