The Restomod of the Legendary Maserati Shamal.

The Past Revives in the Future with MA-01 Maserati Biturbo Shamal. The legendary Maserati Biturbo Shamal, the Trident's icon of design and performance, comes back to life thanks to Modena Automobili's MA-01 restomod project. A reinterpretation that celebrates the allure of the past while integrating it with state-of-the-art technology and contemporary design.

Step back: From Biturbo to Shamal: An Iconic Evolution

Step back: From Biturbo to Shamal: An Iconic Evolution

In 1982, the Maserati Biturbo redefined the automotive landscape with its bold design and extraordinary performance, becoming a symbol of innovation and prestige. With the introduction of the Maserati Shamal in 1989, the range reached its zenith: a 3,217 cc twin-turbo V8 engine, design by Marcello Gandini, and a limited production run of 369 examples, consolidating its status as an object of desire for the brand's enthusiasts

Modena Automobili transforms the Maserati Biturbo Shamal into a contemporary masterpiece, respecting the original DNA while enhancing it with modern features. The heart of the project is a 3.0-liter Twin Turbo V6 engine, originally designed by Maserati under Ferrari’s supervision, capable of delivering 500 hp and a maximum torque of 550 Nm. This allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds and reach a top speed of 290 km/h. The 8 speed ZF automatic transmission ensures smoothness and precision.

The revised suspension improves handling and stability, while the Brembo braking system and Pirelli PZero tires ensure sporty driving performance. The exterior design, in steel and carbon, reinterprets the original lines with modern details such as LED light clusters and muscular profiles.

A Revolutionized Design for Performance and Style

A Revolutionized Design for Performance and Style

The MA-01 Biturbo Shamal Restomod is not just about performance. Modena Automobili’s design center has completely redesigned the body, which will be made of steel and largely carbon fiber to reduce weight. Starting from the front with a lowered grille, redesigned LED headlights recessed into a carbon structure have been added, along with enlarged air intakes for cooling the more powerful Ferrari/Maserati-designed engine, the upgraded braking system, and brake calipers, as well as an aerodynamic and aggressive splitter.

The bodywork, with its sharp lines and polished surfaces, is interrupted only by the air intakes that are essential for the sporty performance characteristic of the car's DNA and increase its ground effect.

More aggressive thanks to imposing curves on the wheel arches, with the rear ones duly asymmetrical, a modern and blunt reinterpretation of the famous Gandini cut, for an overall width of the car of almost 187 cm; and a new hood, with new air intake grilles and a central bulge of about 2.5 cm, necessary to accommodate the new powertrain.

The muscular appearance with sinuous lines is enhanced by two beveled profiles in the body color that run along the side, accentuating the sporty character and loyalty to tradition. A wide black center pillar running from side to side passing over the roof recalls the original version.

The rear, more prominent but with a streamlined and raised effect, features a “truncated tail” that integrates a deliberately squared-off and protruding arched spoiler underneath.

This frames and harmonizes the rear, with new headlights separated by the distinctive black band bearing the Shamal inscription.

A diffuser with two built-in exhausts on each side and vertical vent vents just above the bumper balance the horizontal development of the design.

Side skirts, with studied chamfers, are in perfect continuity with the front splitter and rear diffuser, accentuating the car's ground effect and aerodynamics. The spoiler with third stop sign placed on the roof adds further aggression.

Exterior trim elements recall the original Shamal model, from the large grille to the trunk sized for the needs of the modern traveler, to the center pillar. Small details, such as the “Trident” on the rear pillars (with the right one hiding the fuel filler cap) and faithfully reproduced door handles, complete the work.

Interior: Luxury and Technology

The interior of Project MA-01 pays homage to the original model, but with a contemporary twist. Recaro Classic LX seats, ergonomic and customizable, complement the Biturbo's restored rear seats. The digital dashboard, inspired by the “d'antan” Shamal, integrates a state-of-the-art infotainment system, automatic climate control and Maserati's famous oval clock, now removable and wearable. The pedals, dashboard and shift knob recall the original, while a premium audio system (with options such as Bose, JBL and Alpine) completes the experience.
