Porsche Says Goodbye to the 718 Boxster and Cayman in Europe

  • What's the Future of Porsche's Entry-Level Sports Cars?

In a move that signals the end of an era for entry-level sports car enthusiasts in the European Union, Porsche has officially announced the discontinuation of the 718 Boxster and Cayman models in compliance with new cybersecurity regulations. The decision comes as a preemptive measure to adhere to the General Safety Regulation of the European Union, which includes stringent cybersecurity standards set to take effect in July 2024.

Farewell to the Classics

Farewell to the Classics

Porsche's spokesperson, Oliver Hilger, confirmed the departure of the beloved coupe and convertible variants from the EU market, citing their inability to meet the upcoming regulatory requirements. This regulatory shift, however, does not spell the end for all 718 models. Exceptions are made for limited-production variants such as the Cayman GT4 RS and Boxster RS Spyder.

The root of the issue lies in the electrical architecture of the Boxster and Cayman models, which falls short of the impending cybersecurity standards. Retrofitting these models to comply with the new regulations would entail substantial financial investments, roughly equating to half the budget allocated for the development of an entirely new model—making it an economically unviable prospect for Porsche.

Introduced in 2016 under the internal codename "982," the fourth-generation Boxster/Cayman platform has seen its fair share of success. However, its aging design, coupled with the evolving regulatory landscape, has prompted Porsche to make the difficult decision to retire the models from the EU market. This move is unlikely to significantly impact Porsche's overall sales, given the strong performance of other models like the Macan, which enjoyed global sales of over 87,000 units in 2023 alone.

For enthusiasts eager to acquire a piece of automotive history, time is of the essence. While new configurations of the 718 Boxster and Cayman are no longer available in EU markets, prospective buyers can still secure these iconic models from existing stock. However, come July 1, unsold inventory will become ineligible for registration, signaling the definitive conclusion of an era for Porsche's beloved entry-level sports cars in Europe.
