Simulator Shows Red Bull RB17 Can Lap Silverstone Quicker Than an F1 Car

  • What technological advancements and design features enable the RB17 to potentially outpace current F1 cars?

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s renowned and soon-to-depart design genius, unveiled a creation that promises to redefine performance in the automotive world—the Red Bull RB17. With a mind-boggling 1,200 horsepower from a 4.5-liter V-10 engine, a curb weight under 2,000 pounds, and an astonishing 3,747 pounds of downforce, the RB17 is a marvel of engineering that has already made waves by outperforming a modern Formula 1 car in simulation testing.

The Tech Behind the Speed

Newey revealed to the media that recent simulations indicate the RB17 can lap Silverstone faster than a current F1 car. According to the simulations, the RB17 would have been on pole at the last British Grand Prix, clocking in about a second faster than the pole time. "In our simulations, driver-in-the-loop simulations, they would’ve comfortably been on pole in Silverstone last weekend," Newey stated, highlighting the car's incredible potential.

The RB17’s impressive performance is attributed to several key technological advancements. The car features active suspension and tailored downforce that adjusts depending on speed and settings, along with balance adjustments that are built into the system. These features, combined with three different tire choices, allow the RB17 to be driven by skilled amateurs and professional drivers alike. "It’s a car that’s capable of being driven by a good amateur who’s also hopefully done some training with us on the simulator, and can really feel the car, and then start to build and develop with the car, through to ultimately, in the right hands, capable of Formula 1 lap times," Newey explained.

A critical component of the RB17’s performance is its bespoke Michelin tires. Developed specifically for the RB17, these "confidential" tires use compounds similar to those found in LMDh and Hypercar categories. Michelin keeps the tire composition a closely guarded secret, even from the car’s constructors, and retrieves the tires after each run to maintain this confidentiality. This tire technology ensures that the RB17 can achieve unparalleled grip and performance.

Despite its extreme capabilities, the RB17 is designed to be approachable for drivers at different skill levels. The car’s active aero and suspension systems make it easier to handle, and it comes with two additional Michelin tire options—a treaded and a slick variant—that are designed to be more user-friendly, albeit at the expense of some performance. Additionally, the engine features power-level modes, allowing drivers to adjust the car’s output to match their experience and comfort levels.

Red Bull plans to produce only 50 examples of the RB17, with production starting next year. Each of these cars will likely set blistering lap times at circuits around the world, showcasing the pinnacle of Red Bull’s automotive engineering prowess.

The Red Bull RB17 is not just a car; it is a statement of what is possible when cutting-edge technology meets visionary design. As it stands, the RB17 is set to leave an indelible mark on the world of high-performance vehicles, challenging even the fastest machines on the planet.
