Toyota Built the AWD GR86 Rally Car of Our Dreams

Toyota is once again turning heads at this year's SEMA show, unveiling a concept that will leave fans of performance and rally racing eagerly anticipating what could have been. The GR86 Rally Legacy concept car takes the beloved GR86 and turns it into an all-wheel-drive (AWD) rally monster, complete with a turbocharged engine borrowed from the GR Corolla. Retro-inspired yet incredibly modern, this concept is a perfect homage to Toyota’s rich history in rallying, and it’s impossible to ignore the potential it has to set the stage for an entirely new performance future for the GR86.

Retro Styling Meets Rally Performance

Retro Styling Meets Rally Performance

The GR86 Rally Legacy concept has a design that takes us straight back to the 1980s when rally racing was synonymous with speed, grit, and endurance. Toyota has decked the car out in a stunning Castrol-style rally livery. The design features the iconic red mud flaps and white wheels that immediately recall the golden era of motorsport, where Toyota made its mark with the Celica All-Trac in World Rally Championship events.

Inside the cabin, the GR86 Rally Legacy concept stays true to its racing heritage. The minimalistic, race-ready interior features Sparco racing seats and a Sparco steering wheel, while a full roll cage emphasizes that this car is not built for the street, but for the rough and rugged terrain of rally stages. The focus here is on weight savings, performance, and, of course, safety, with little else cluttering the cockpit.

Power and Performance

Power and Performance

What truly makes this concept special, however, is what’s under the hood. The GR86 Rally Legacy is powered by the GR Corolla’s turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine, which produces 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. These figures match the power output of the production GR Corolla, but Toyota hints that the rally version has even more potential. Photos of the car show a sequential racing gearbox, indicating that this is no ordinary GR86 – it’s built for serious performance, with the gearbox optimized for rapid gear shifts in the heat of battle.

Of course, the big news here is the addition of an all-wheel-drive system. Borrowing the GR Corolla’s AWD setup means that the GR86 Rally Legacy is poised to take on a variety of surfaces, from dirt and gravel to snow and tarmac. Achieving this level of complexity required some serious engineering ingenuity. To make the AWD system work, Toyota engineers modified the GR86’s chassis to accommodate the taller, transverse-mounted engine. This meant fabricating a custom subframe and engine mounts to fit the GR Corolla’s powertrain, a feat that no doubt required plenty of trial and error.

Further modifications included the addition of the Corolla’s hubs, spindles, and axles to transfer power to the front wheels, while the rear differential and housing from the GR Corolla were used to maintain the proper gear ratios for a balanced and effective AWD setup.

The concept also features a center-mounted dual exhaust system, adding to its aggressive aesthetic while improving the vehicle’s exhaust flow for improved performance. There’s no shortage of mechanical prowess here; the GR86 Rally Legacy is as functional as it is striking, and it looks every bit the part of a serious rally contender.

It’s worth noting that, while the GR86 Rally Legacy is a thrilling concept, Toyota has no plans to put it into production. The complexities of adapting the GR Corolla’s engine and AWD system to the GR86’s chassis make this more of a one-off showcase of what could be, rather than a blueprint for a future production model. But for those lucky enough to attend SEMA, seeing the GR86 Rally Legacy in person will be a rare treat and a reminder of Toyota’s commitment to pushing boundaries in performance and motorsport.

The GR86 Rally Legacy concept car is a brilliant demonstration of Toyota's engineering prowess and motorsport DNA. With its all-wheel drive, turbocharged engine, and throwback rally styling, it embodies the spirit of Toyota’s rally history while showcasing cutting-edge performance technologies. Even though it’s not going into production, the GR86 Rally Legacy is a thrilling look into the possibilities that might exist for Toyota’s performance cars, and fans can only dream about what might come next.

If you find yourself at SEMA this week, be sure to swing by the Toyota booth to get an up-close look at this exceptional concept. While it might not be available for purchase, the GR86 Rally Legacy will surely inspire future performance vehicles—and leave a lasting impression on all who see it.
