After years of rumors and speculation, Toyota has officially confirmed that a brand new mid engine sports car is finally on the way. With Gazoo Racing now operating as its own dedicated performance sub brand, Toyota is pushing the envelope once again, promising fresh powertrains and the return of true driver focused cars.
Toyota fans have been waiting for a mid engine comeback since the MR2 left the scene in 2007. Now, thanks to confirmation from Gazoo Racing’s president Tomoya Takahashi, the wait is almost over. Prototype testing for the unnamed sports car has already started, but production is still years away. Takahashi explained that the project is only in the first of four development phases, so the earliest anyone will see the new model in showrooms is around 2030. That means plenty of time for more details to emerge and for anticipation to build.
In addition to the car’s layout, the biggest news is the engine under development. The G20E is a brand new turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder that has already been tested in the GR Yaris M concept. Toyota’s engineers are targeting more than 400 horsepower, which is a huge jump from the 300 horsepower delivered by the current 1.6 liter three cylinder in models like the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. In race trim, this new engine could even reach over 600 horsepower. Toyota says the G20E will be electrified, more efficient, and compatible with other platforms, not just mid engine sports cars.
The mid engine project isn’t the only sporty surprise in Toyota’s pipeline. Cooper Ericksen, the VP of product planning for North America, has already mentioned that Celica test cars are out on the roads. These front engine models are well into development, and some dealers have even seen early sketches. While nothing has been shown to the public yet, a new Celica could debut before 2028, adding another icon to Toyota’s expanding GR lineup. With the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, GR Supra, GR86, and possibly new Celica and MR2 models, Toyota looks ready to bring affordable fun back for driving fans everywhere.
