Toyota has officially confirmed that the GR Supra is heading toward the end of the road. The final unit of the current generation will roll off the production line in March 2026, signaling the close of an era that began in 2019. This comes as fans and industry insiders alike speculate about what comes next for the legendary nameplate. With just months left to order one, the countdown is on for enthusiasts hoping to claim a piece of modern sports car history before it disappears.
The last GR Supra will be built in March 2026, giving buyers a short window to secure a final edition model. Realistically, though, the order books will close long before that date. Toyota’s announcement doesn’t come as a shock, given the A90 Supra’s aging platform and the already-declining availability of trims like the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which was discontinued for the US after 2024.
Recent drives of the A90 Final Edition show that Toyota made minor improvements to handling, but left power output unchanged for most markets. The US version keeps the 382 hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six from BMW, paired with either a six speed manual or an eight speed automatic transmission.
While the current GR Supra is bowing out, the nameplate isn’t dead. Rumors and statements from Toyota suggest that a successor is already in the works. This next generation Supra could debut in 2027 and is expected to stay true to the front engine, rear wheel drive formula. But this time, it may ditch the BMW-sourced engines in favor of a new 2.0-liter turbocharged unit developed by Toyota itself. Early whispers claim it could push around 394 hp.
Meanwhile, BMW will also end Z4 production in 2026, closing the chapter on their shared sports car venture. Both models have been built at Magna Steyr’s plant in Austria, but there are no known plans for a follow-up collaboration.
As the Supra winds down, its main rival, the Nissan Z, is enjoying stronger sales. Recent reports show the Z has sold over 4,800 units in 2025 so far, more than doubling the Supra’s 2,009 sales. The Z’s competitive pricing, fresh design, and solid performance are making it a more appealing choice for sports car fans.
Toyota may need to rethink its strategy for the next Supra to regain ground in the sports coupe market. If the 2027 model delivers a stronger value proposition with Toyota’s own powertrain and a new platform, it might just win back the attention it once dominated.
