Toyota Supra Returns With A V8 For The Track

15 Aug 2025
  • What engine powers the new GR Supra V8?
  • When and where will the Supra V8 race for the first time?

The Toyota GR Supra is heading into its final production year, but it is not leaving quietly. Instead, Toyota has given the iconic coupe a wild new identity as a track-only machine built for Australia’s Supercars Championship. Scheduled to debut in 2026, this special version swaps its BMW-sourced turbo engines for Toyota’s own naturally aspirated 5.0 liter V8, making it the most powerful and dramatic Supra yet. While fans in the Middle East and elsewhere will not see it in showrooms, its arrival on the grid signals one of the boldest chapters in Supra history.

The Engine

The Engine

Under the hood of the Supra Supercar sits the legendary 2UR GSE engine, a 5.0 liter quad cam V8 developed with Yamaha. Known from performance cars like the Lexus IS F, RC F, and LC 500, this engine is famous for its raw sound and high revving character. For racing duty, it has been tuned and refined by Walkinshaw Andretti United in the UK and Craig Hasted in Australia to meet Supercars regulations. Toyota executives admitted they briefly discussed sticking with a six cylinder, but the idea lasted less than a minute. In a championship where Ford’s Mustang runs a 5.4 liter V8 and Chevrolet’s Camaro packs a 5.7 liter V8, Toyota knew only a V8 would give the Supra the right soundtrack and presence. The result is a Supra that not only competes in speed but also in sound, with Toyota calling its roar spine tingling and symbolic of passion, precision, and progress.

The Debut

The Debut

Toyota has already revealed design previews, including a wider body, a new front splitter, a large rear wing, and aggressive fender flares that make the GR Supra Supercar look like a completely different beast. The car will ride on 18 inch racing wheels with slick Dunlop tires and stop with the help of AP Racing brakes, giving it everything needed to fight in one of the toughest racing series in the world. Only six cars will be built, with Walkinshaw Andretti United and Brad Jones Racing preparing them for competition. The big moment will come at the Bathurst 1000 in October, when fans will finally hear the Supra’s V8 roar on track for the first time. From there, the car will take part in the full 2026 Supercars Championship, battling head to head with Ford and Chevrolet in a season that promises some of the most exciting racing in years.
