RM Sotheby’s Private Sales makes its annual pilgrimage to Paris this week for the Rétromobile show—the traditional curtain-raiser for the European collector car season. To mark the occasion, the Private Sales division has assembled a truly stellar $40,000,000 array of vehicles comprising some of the world’s most sought-after collector cars, which will be on display throughout the event from 28 January-1 February.

Legendary Race Icons: McLaren F1 GTR, Ayrton Senna’s Lotus 98T, and Ferrari 250 GT SWB

Leading the quartet is a spectacular 1997 McLaren F1 GTR (Est: $18,000,000 - $21,000,000 USD), one of only 10 ‘Longtail’ examples built and the first to ever win a race, following victory in the opening round of the 1997 British GT Championship at Silverstone. It also became the first privately-entered Longtail to lead an FIA GT Championship race, and was campaigned in six rounds of the 1997 FIA GT Championship including an outing at the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans. Retaining its matching-numbers V-12 engine, the GTR was subject to a full restoration and conversion for road use by marque specialist Lanzante at a cost exceeding £300,000, further benefitting from a recent major service, replacement fuel tanks, and new gold leaf lining for the engine bay. The McLaren will be offered via Sealed with bidding closing 12 March, presenting its future custodian with a golden ticket to everything from the Le Mans Classic to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The motorsport theme is continued by Ayrton Senna’s iconic John Player Special-liveried 1986 Lotus 98T (Est: $9,500,000 - $12,000,000 USD) Formula One car, which was campaigned by the Brazilian ace in the first half of the 1986 season and scored two wins, five pole positions, and a further three podium finishes. Chassis 98T-3 was driven to memorable victories at the 1986 Spanish Grand Prix—where Senna pipped Nigel Mansell to the line by just 0.014 seconds—and the 1986 United States Grand Prix. As well as becoming synonymous with the greatest driver of his generation, Ayrton Senna, the turbocharged, 1,000 brake-horsepower Lotus 98T was the final Lotus Formula One model to wear the iconic black-and-gold livery of John Player Special. As one of the most powerful Grand Prix cars ever created, chassis 98T-3 became emblematic not only of Ayrton Senna’s prodigious talent, but of the wildest period in Formula One’s long history. It will be offered via Sealed, with bidding closing 11 March. Joining the competition cars is one of Ferrari’s most celebrated sports grand tourers: a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta by Scaglietti (Est: Price Upon Request). The ultimate supercar of its day, only 77 steel-bodied, left-hand-drive examples of the Short-Wheelbase were built, among them this late-production Swiss-delivery example. Boasting just three UK-based owners since 1973 and a rare original colour scheme of Bianco Polo Park over Rosso leather—the only steel-bodied car so specified—the Ferrari has since been restored to an exceptional standard in the Blu Notte Metallizzato over Rosso it wears today.

With a class win at the 2014 Salon Prive Concours d’Elegance and a Best-of-Show at the Ferrari Owners’ Club Concours a year later, this exceptionally well documented, matching-numbers, and Ferrari Classiche-certified example offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of Maranello’s most legendary models. It is available for immediate acquisition via RM Sotheby’s Private Sales. The group is rounded off by a 1990 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer – DLS Turbo Services (Est: $3,450,000 - $5,000,000 USD)—the very first DLS Turbo ever delivered to a customer, and now the first to be offered to the public. “The Sepang Commission” is an exceptional example of the wild motorsport-inspired restorations from Singer’s DLS Turbo Services and was commissioned by a serial Singer customer with a fanatical attention to detail. Built to left-hand-drive specifications, it comes complete with both high downforce and low downforce rear decklid and front fascias. The Singer will be offered via Sealed, closing in late March. The sale of The Sepang Commission follows RM Sotheby’s being announced as Singer’s preferred selling partner for all secondary market Singer vehicles—known to the company as Encore sales. Each example offered across RM Sotheby’s Private Sales and Sealed platforms will come complete with a 12-month manufacturer’s warranty, ensuring that new buyers are welcomed into the Singer family from the very first day of ownership. Elsewhere in Paris, the Louvre Palace’s spectacular Les Salles du Carrousel will play host to the 13th running of Europe’s premier collector car auction on 28 January, with highlights including a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider by Scaglietti (Est: €12,000,000 - €14,000,000), Alfonso de Portago’s historic 1956 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’ by Scaglietti (Est: In Excess of €13,000,000), and an exemplary 1997 Ferrari F50 (Est: €5,500,000 - €6,500,000).
