  • Can a Life-Size Lego Volvo V70 Redefine the Intersection of Art and Engineering, Paving the Way for a New Era of Creative Expression in Automotive Design?

In the fascinating world where creativity and passion collide, Lego enthusiast David Gustafsson from Sweden has taken on an extraordinary project – building a life-size replica of his own Volvo V70 entirely out of Lego bricks. This impressive endeavor, which has been in the works for over a year, showcases not only Gustafsson's dedication to his craft but also the incredible potential of Lego as a medium for artistic expression.

The Irony of "Brick" Volvo

The Irony of

The irony of recreating an older "brick" Volvo V70 with Lego bricks is not lost on enthusiasts. The V70, affectionately known as a "brick" due to its boxy design, has been immortalized in an entirely new form. This 1:1 scale model captures the essence of the classic Volvo wagon, paying homage to its iconic shape with a touch of whimsy and creativity. David Gustafsson, a Lego megafan and winner of over 400,000 Lego pieces through the Lego Masters competition, spearheads this ambitious project. With a background in smaller-scale Lego art, Gustafsson took inspiration from his own Volvo V70 and embarked on the journey to create a life-size version. His journey is documented on Brickscale.com, showcasing the meticulous progress and attention to detail involved in this exceptional endeavor.

While the exterior may be composed of Lego bricks, the Volvo V70 project incorporates a metal frame underneath for structural support. Normal wheels and tires, essential for a functional vehicle, provide the foundation for this life-size Lego creation. This blending of traditional automotive components with Lego elements brings a touch of reality to the whimsical project.

What sets this Lego creation apart is not just its size but also its functionality. Virtually everything, from the seats and dash to the steering wheel and instrument cluster, is crafted from Lego bricks. The doors open, lights turn on, and the Volvo V70 boasts a myriad of functional features. The interior showcases power mirrors, climate control knobs, a movable shifter, and even headlights that pivot when turning the steering wheel. The icing on the cake – it's an electric vehicle with a working electric motor that powers the wheels, making it a unique Lego EV you can actually drive.

As a work in progress, the life-size Lego Volvo V70 currently boasts an impressive investment of over 350,000 bricks. The source of Gustafsson's Lego pieces, his win from the Lego Masters competition, adds an intriguing layer to the project. While it remains uncertain whether all 400,000 pieces will be utilized, updates on Gustafsson's social media channels promise to keep enthusiasts in the loop as he nears the finish line.

For those fortunate enough to be in Sweden, the life-size Lego Volvo V70 is set to make public appearances at various locations through April. The car recently made waves at the Ecar Expo in Gothenburg, where spectators had the chance to witness the assembly process. With the final touches being added, Gustafsson's creation is poised to leave a lasting impression on both Lego enthusiasts and automotive aficionados alike.

David Gustafsson's life-size Lego Volvo V70 stands as a testament to the boundless creativity that can be achieved with Lego bricks. This unique project merges the worlds of automotive design and Lego artistry, creating a captivating spectacle that challenges perceptions and sparks imaginations. As the finishing touches are added and the project nears completion, the life-size Lego Volvo V70 is sure to remain a symbol of innovation, passion, and the limitless possibilities of artistic expression.

AMALGAM COLLECTION REVEAL LIMITED EDITION OF 1:18 SCALE MODELS OF THE $5.1M FERRARI 812 COMPETIZIONE TAILOR MADE

Amalgam Collection has today revealed that they have started development of a Limited Edition of 1:18 scale models perfectly replicating the unique Ferrari 812 Competizione Tailor Made that sold at auction for $5.1m in New York, last October. Limited to 250 pieces, this special Art Car edition is a celebration of the passion and artistry of Ferrari Centro Stile, and will become a much sought-after collectable, especially appealing to Ferrari’s most ardent followers who also appreciate art and design. The creative team at Amalgam anticipate that the edition of models will be completed by their artisans in Autumn 2024. Currently, models in this exceptional edition are only available to pre-order directly from Amalgam Collection.

The new Limited Edition of 250 1:18 scale models follows in the footsteps of the creation by Amalgam of a unique 1:8 scale model last year. The handcrafted 1:8 model was donated by Amalgam Collection and raised significant funding for the Ferrari Foundation, alongside the real car that fetched $5.1 million USD.

Using the original CAD data supplied by Ferrari Centro Stile, Amalgam’s artisans have been able to perfectly recreate the form and every refined detail of the livery of the unique 812 Competizione Tailor Made. The model only received the approval of Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni and his design team once they were fully satisfied with its accuracy of representation.

Sandy Copeman, Founder of Amalgam Collection, commented: “While our models are often described as works of art, and are indeed artistic in their creation, in truth, since they deliver the essence of the cars they represent, ultimately the beauty of our models is dependent on the beauty of the car they capture. In this instance, there is no question that both the car and models are art.”
