Mazda has unveiled the Spirit Racing Roadster 12R, a limited-edition Miata designed to push boundaries. First previewed at the Tokyo Auto Salon, this exclusive model offers a perfect blend of power, style, and handling upgrades tailored for the Japanese market. The 12R stands out with an aerodynamic body kit finished in Aero Gray, forged Rays TE37 lightweight wheels, and Yokohama Advan AD09 tires. These upgrades enhance its iconic lightweight design, while Brembo front brakes and Bilstein height-adjustable dampers ensure sharper performance.
Inside, the cabin showcases racing-inspired luxury with Recaro bucket seats, a Sabelt four-point harness, and Alcantara-wrapped details on the steering wheel, handbrake, and gear knob. For exclusivity, each unit features a unique "12R" badge and a numbered engine plaque, making it a collector's item for Miata enthusiasts.
Under the hood, the Spirit Racing Roadster 12R houses an upgraded 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine that now delivers 197 horsepower—a notable improvement over the Miata's initial 155 hp in 2015. This marks the second power boost in the ND generation's lifecycle, achieved through modifications to the intake, exhaust, pistons, and camshafts. While a 16-hp gain may seem modest, the lightweight Miata turns every ounce of power into pure exhilaration.
Paired with a six-speed manual transmission, the upgraded engine delivers sharper responsiveness and more spirited performance. The 12R ensures a thrilling drive without sacrificing the balance and agility that define the Miata. However, with only 200 units priced at seven million yen (around $44,300), exclusivity is key. For enthusiasts who miss out, Mazda plans to release a more widely available Spirit Racing Roadster in 2025, sharing many of the same features minus the extra power and premium touches.
