Replica Porsche 387 Speedster: When Classic Style Costs More Than a New 718 Spyder RS

01 Feb 2026
  • What is the real story behind the Signature Autosports 387 Speedster replica?
  • Why does the 387 Speedster cost more than a brand new 718 Spyder RS?

The classic car world is buzzing again, but this time it is not about a real Porsche 356. Instead, the spotlight is on the 387 Speedster Heritage by Signature Autosports, a reverse restomod that captures vintage looks while hiding a very modern core. With a price tag that tops even the brand new Porsche 718 Spyder RS, collectors and car fans are split. Is this replica the ultimate tribute or just a high-priced illusion?

Modern Engineering Wrapped in Retro Style

Forget rusty restorations. The 387 Speedster Heritage is built on the bones of a 2005 Porsche Boxster S (987) and sometimes even older 986 models. Every single exterior panel is swapped for hand-shaped fiberglass, capturing the curves and proportions of the legendary 356 Speedster from the 1950s. Chrome details, teardrop taillights, a working rear spoiler, and smartly hidden modern air intakes keep the illusion alive. Even the power roof is electric, making daily driving a breeze without sacrificing that vintage vibe.

Inside, the retro mood continues but comfort is anything but old school. The basic Boxster layout is dressed up with rich leather and the classic Pepita houndstooth fabric. Buyers get the perks of heated seats, climate control, and a modern infotainment setup fit for 2026. Plus, every car is custom built, so you can choose colors and trims to match your personal taste. The result? Each 387 Speedster is unique, a mix of nostalgia and high-tech.

Performance and Pricing: Is the 387 Speedster Worth Its Hefty Tag?

Performance and Pricing: Is the 387 Speedster Worth Its Hefty Tag?

Under the vintage shell, there is real sports car muscle. The 387 Speedster uses the 3.4 liter naturally aspirated flat six from the Boxster S, delivering about 231 kilowatts and 360 Newton meters of torque. Buyers can pick between a 6 speed manual gearbox for purists or a 7 speed PDK automatic for those who want effortless shifts. Suspension and brakes can be upgraded, so it corners and stops just as well as it accelerates.

But the biggest talking point is price. Signature Autosports starts the 387 Speedster at 199,950 dollars, which is actually more expensive than a brand new Porsche 718 Spyder RS (starting around 170,100 dollars). It is also pricier than some rival replicas based on the newer 718 platform. While a real 356 can go past half a million dollars, dropping nearly 200 grand on a twenty year old Boxster in disguise makes some collectors pause. To add fuel to the fire, similar looking British replicas once sold for far less, raising even more questions about the long term value of this retro-modern hybrid.
