Rust Meets Power: Classic Chevy Trucks Reborn with Modern Silverado Tech

  • What makes the 1970 Chevrolet C20 so unique?
  • How did Icon merge classic charm with modern technology?

In a world where custom trucks often push boundaries in style and engineering, few builds manage to strike the perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation. Los Angeles based shop Icon has done just that with its latest creation, a 1970 Chevrolet C20 that hides the heart and soul of a modern Silverado under its weathered, rust kissed exterior. This build is part of Icon’s celebrated Derelict series, known for preserving original patina while infusing the vehicle with cutting edge performance and comfort.

From the outside, this C20 could pass for a survivor pulled straight from a barnyard, complete with genuine 1970s rust and classic proportions. But step inside and the transformation is undeniable. The cabin features a fully custom dashboard with a center screen, a reverse camera, digital gauges, and a premium audio system. The front bench retains its old school silhouette but is wrapped in Connolly leather and accented with Wool Plaid fabric for a retro luxury vibe.

Underneath, a 5.3 liter Ecotec V8 from the modern Silverado delivers smooth, dependable power. The truck benefits from the Silverado’s chassis and mechanicals, making it a reliable daily driver disguised as a vintage workhorse.

According to Jonathan Ward, founder and CEO of Icon, the main challenge was integrating contemporary technology while keeping the spirit of the 1970s intact. The team achieved this by preserving the Silverado’s original electrical and digital systems through a complex CAN bus setup. This allows the truck to be serviced just like a brand new model, despite its vintage shell.

Icon’s mastery of this blend is not stopping here. The company revealed that another Derelict build is in progress, a short wheelbase 1968 Chevrolet C10 that will receive the same treatment. These projects highlight Icon’s commitment to timeless design, mechanical precision, and a philosophy that values authenticity over fleeting trends.
