When it comes to restomodding classic off-roaders, few projects strike the perfect balance between modern performance and respect for original design. Legacy Overland has achieved just that with this 1977 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45. By stripping the Aussie-spec model down to its bare frame, the team rebuilt the icon from the ground up while preserving its unmistakable character.
Legacy Overland replaced the original engine with a robust 4.5-liter six-cylinder sourced from an FJ80 Land Cruiser. Coupled with a five-speed manual transmission and transfer case, this powerplant not only improves performance but also maintains the spirit of traditional driving. In addition to the engine swap, new drive shafts, an upgraded radiator, a modern cooling system, and brake rotors were installed to ensure reliable operation under rugged conditions. The suspension received a significant boost with a 2.5-inch lift using Old Man Emu and ARB leaf springs and shocks, making the FJ45 even more capable on challenging terrain.
Beyond mechanical enhancements, Legacy Overland has given this Land Cruiser a fresh new look while respecting its classic roots. The frame was thoroughly repaired, sandblasted, and finished with an epoxy coat before being painted in a striking Dune Beige—a color perfectly suited for off-road adventures. The exterior is further accentuated by 16-inch steel wheels with chrome hub caps and a matching soft top in Dune Beige. Inside, the original steering wheel was carefully restored, and modern Dakota Digital gauges now provide accurate instrumentation. The cabin also boasts a custom sound system, air conditioning, and newly trimmed leather seats, ensuring that even after nearly 50 years, this Land Cruiser offers both style and comfort.
Legacy Overland’s transformation of the 1977 Toyota FJ45 proves that with the right blend of modern technology and respect for original design, even the most classic off-roaders can be reborn as capable, contemporary machines. This restomod is a testament to the passion and expertise required to keep automotive legends alive for purists and adventurers alike.
