V12 Datsun 240Z Brings Ferrari Level Sound to a Japanese Icon

  • How does a Mercedes Benz V12 fit inside a classic Datsun 240Z?
  • Why does this V12 swapped 240Z stand out in the tuning world?

Few classic Japanese cars command attention like the Datsun 240Z. When builders decide to swap engines into this lightweight coupe, they unlock a whole new personality. In this case, Jordan Easter and Michael Tung push the formula to an extreme level by installing a Mercedes Benz M120 V12 into the long nose of the legendary Z. The result delivers a sound and presence that rivals exotic European machines, while keeping the timeless style that makes the 240Z such a favorite among enthusiasts across the world, including passionate drivers in Saudi Arabia and the wider Arab region.

A Perfect Fit for a Wild Idea

Surprisingly, the Mercedes Benz M120 V12 fits remarkably well inside the generous engine bay of the Datsun 240Z. Builders originally planned to use this engine in an RX 7 project, but tight packaging made that idea impossible. When they turned their attention to the 240Z, they discovered the chassis offered the space they needed for the ambitious swap.

Jordan Easter and Michael Tung adapted the drivetrain carefully to make everything function properly. They used an S600 bellhousing paired with an adapter plate, which connects to a T56 six speed gearbox. They managed engine control through a Megasquirt MS3 Pro ECU, ensuring the V12 runs smoothly and reliably.

They did not stop at simply fitting the engine. They upgraded suspension components, strengthened the braking system, and enhanced safety features to meet the technical requirements of the Empire Hill Climb event, where the car was initially intended to compete. They also designed a serious exhaust setup that allows the V12 to breathe freely. That exhaust note now defines the personality of the build, delivering a high pitched mechanical scream that instantly reminds listeners of a Ferrari inspired soundtrack.

More Than a Swap, It Is a Statement

More Than a Swap, It Is a Statement

Engine swaps in the Datsun 240Z community are nothing new. Enthusiasts regularly experiment with inline six engines, V8 conversions, and modern performance units. However, installing a naturally aspirated Mercedes Benz V12 takes the concept to another level.

Jordan explains that many purists either appreciate the creativity or feel genuinely intrigued by the result. The 240Z platform remains affordable and spacious, which makes it ideal for ambitious projects. That freedom encourages builders to think beyond conventional limits.

Even though the current chassis performs well, the long term plan involves sourcing a cleaner 240Z shell and transferring the running gear into it. After completing that step, the owners intend to focus on driving the car regularly, putting real miles on it, and enjoying the unique machine they created.

This build proves that the Datsun 240Z continues to inspire bold ideas decades after its debut. It combines Japanese design, German engineering, and an Italian style soundtrack into one unforgettable package. For enthusiasts who appreciate character, sound, and craftsmanship, this V12 powered Z stands as a reminder that true passion often lives in the most unexpected combinations.
