Volvo is set to challenge Tesla’s long-standing dominance in the luxury electric sedan market with the all-new 2026 Volvo ES90. Positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model S, this sleek fastback sedan blends Scandinavian elegance with cutting-edge EV technology. With multiple powertrain options, a luxurious and sustainable interior, and a design that prioritizes aerodynamics, the ES90 aims to carve out its place in the growing high-performance EV segment.
Keeping to Volvo’s design philosophy, the ES90 embraces clean lines and minimalism while incorporating signature brand elements like the “Thor’s Hammer” T-shaped headlights. The taillights extend vertically along the rear window, creating a futuristic yet distinctly Volvo appearance. More than just aesthetics, the ES90 is designed for efficiency, with a drag coefficient of 0.25, ensuring a smooth and aerodynamic ride.
Inside, Volvo has crafted a cabin that reflects Scandinavian nature, offering sustainable materials, earthy color tones, and a panoramic glass roof for an airy feel. The infotainment system is built around a 14.5-inch touchscreen with Google services and Waze navigation paired with a 9-inch driver display and a head-up display for essential driving data. The Bowers & Wilkins sound system enhances the premium feel, while a state-of-the-art occupant monitoring system ensures safety by detecting inattentiveness or forgotten passengers.
The 2026 ES90 is built on Volvo’s SPA2 800-volt platform, the same architecture underpinning the EX90 and Polestar 3 SUVs. It offers three powertrain options to suit different driving preferences:
With 350 kW DC fast charging, the ES90 can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes, and it supports bidirectional charging for energy-sharing capabilities. While official EPA range estimates are still pending, Volvo claims a WLTP range of over 640 km for the Single-Motor model and 690 km for the Twin-Motor versions.
Acceleration figures are equally impressive. The Single Motor variant reaches 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, the Twin Motor in 5.3 seconds, and the Twin Motor Performance in just 3.9 seconds, putting it squarely in competition with Tesla’s lineup.
While Tesla’s Model S remains a benchmark, Volvo’s ES90 takes a different approach, prioritizing luxury, safety, and sustainability over outright performance. Tesla’s entry-level Model S already offers 670 hp and a 0-100 km/h time of 3.1 seconds, making it slightly quicker than the Volvo Twin Motor Performance, but the ES90 counters with a more refined ride and a premium interior experience.
Physically, the ES90 is slightly smaller than the Model S, measuring 500 cm in length, 194 cm in width, and 155 cm in height, with a 310 cm wheelbase. Despite its sleek fastback shape, the ES90 still promises plenty of cabin space for long-distance comfort.
With pricing expected to start around €74,000 ($80,000), the ES90 sits in the same range as the Tesla Model S and Volvo’s EX90 SUV. As Volvo expands its electric lineup, the ES90 is set to offer a compelling blend of Scandinavian craftsmanship, advanced safety, and high-performance EV technology, making it a serious contender in the premium electric sedan market.
