Ford is betting big on its next generation electric pickup, aiming to produce the world’s lowest cost electric motors and bring a truly affordable EV truck to market by 2027. With a price tag targeted at just 30,000 dollars, this Universal EV project is Ford’s answer to rising competition from China and the growing global push for accessible electric vehicles.
Ford’s Universal EV project revolves around building the world’s most affordable electric truck motors. Doug Field, Ford’s chief of EVs, says the company’s new motors will cost less than anything currently available, even those made in China. Instead of relying on new materials or secret technology, Ford is assembling a top talent team in California, away from its Michigan headquarters. This 500 person group includes engineers hired from big tech and EV rivals like Tesla and Apple, all handpicked for their ability to innovate and move fast.
The company is focusing on clever engineering, not just automation. By reducing the number of fasteners by 25 percent and shrinking the wiring harness by more than 1,200 meters compared to the Mustang Mach E, Ford can cut costs at every step. The truck will use large aluminum castings and a battery pack that doubles as the cabin floor, streamlining both production and design.
Set to launch in 2027, Ford’s midsize electric pickup will arrive in a single crew cab body style but with options for both rear wheel and all wheel drive. The rear drive version uses a permanent magnet motor, while all wheel drive models add a front induction motor, much like the Tesla Model 3. Buyers can also choose between more than one battery pack, letting them balance cost against driving range.
Production of the Universal EV will take place in Louisville, Kentucky, with the assembly line operating 15 percent faster than previous models like the Escape. Ford’s strategy isn’t just about automating work, but eliminating unnecessary steps altogether, with the plant’s workstations being cut by 40 percent. All of these efforts are aimed at delivering a true budget electric truck that doesn’t compromise on quality or performance.
