Mercedes AMG has once again pushed the limits of electric performance with its Concept GT XX. At the Nardò high speed test track in Italy, the car achieved a stunning new benchmark by covering 5,479 kilometers within 24 hours. Over the course of one week, two GT XX prototypes went even further, completing a distance equal to the Earth’s circumference at 40,075 kilometers. This achievement marks a new chapter in the future of electric endurance and performance.
The Concept GT XX shattered the previous best for an electric car, which stood at less than 4,000 kilometers in 24 hours. By reaching 5,479 kilometers in one day, it established a new endurance milestone for EVs. Beyond that, two prototypes ran continuously for 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes, and 7 seconds, covering 40,075 kilometers. This achievement not only underlines Mercedes AMG’s technical excellence but also positions the GT XX as a symbol of durability and speed in the electric age.
During the tests, the GT XX maintained a steady speed of 300 kilometers per hour around the 12.68 kilometer Nardò circuit. The cars only stopped for charging sessions, which averaged at 850 kW of power. After each recharge, they immediately returned to top speed. The program required 3,177 laps, with drivers rotating in two hour shifts. Even as track temperatures climbed to 35 degrees Celsius, the cars stayed reliable, proving the resilience of the new AMG.EA electric technology.
Underneath its aerodynamic design, the GT XX runs on three advanced axial flux motors paired with a directly cooled high performance battery. Together, they deliver more than 1,000 kW, which is around 1,360 horsepower. Axial flux motors are smaller, lighter, and provide three times the power density of traditional units. The cylindrical NCMA battery cells, cooled by non conductive oil, allow for sustained output and ultra fast charging. In tests, the GT XX could recharge enough for 400 kilometers in only five minutes.
Mercedes AMG designed this program not only to test technology but also to continue its tradition of record breaking runs at Nardò. The project required a full pit crew, safety staff, and remote monitoring from the Affalterbach headquarters. Michelin and Alpitronic supported the mission with tires and charging solutions. This echoes earlier endurance experiments like the iconic C111 from the 1970s and 1980s. With the GT XX, Mercedes AMG is proving that its upcoming electric cars will deliver both performance and long term durability.
