Mini Recalls 140,000 EVs Over Battery Fire Risk

14 Sep 2024
  • What factors are causing Mini EV battery malfunctions, and how does the software update address these issues?

Mini is recalling over 140,000 of its electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide due to a potential battery fire risk, including 12,535 in the United States. The recall specifically affects the 2020-2024 Mini Cooper SE models. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall stems from possible faults in the high-voltage battery that may not meet the automaker's production standards.

Safety Update for Battery Malfunctions

Safety Update for Battery Malfunctions

The NHTSA's Safety Recall Report mentions that the issue could be due to various factors but doesn't pinpoint a direct cause. A malfunction in the battery or the high-voltage system could potentially lead to a short circuit, which could result in overheating and a "thermal event," or a fire. This risk exists even when the vehicle is not in operation, though a warning message will alert drivers if something goes wrong.

While the recall highlights significant safety concerns, BMW North America, which oversees Mini, has reassured owners that no injuries or accidents have been reported related to the issue. The investigation began in October 2023 after a Mini experienced a thermal event. By January 2024, a second incident had been reported in Germany, prompting further scrutiny.

To address the problem, Mini will be rolling out a software update to all potentially affected vehicles. The update will include a diagnostic function that can detect malfunctions in the high-voltage battery and automatically discharge it to below 30 percent to minimize risks. This update will be provided free of charge to all affected owners.

Mini will start notifying vehicle owners about the recall starting October 7, 2024, advising them to take their vehicles to a dealership for the necessary software upgrade. Though the risk of a fire is rare, the recall reflects growing concern over safety standards in EV production as the industry continues to expand.

With the rise in EV popularity, automakers are under increasing pressure to ensure the safety and reliability of their battery systems. This recall serves as a reminder of the technical challenges manufacturers face as they transition toward electrification. While Mini's prompt action reflects a commitment to safety, it also underscores the critical importance of vigilant monitoring and constant improvement in the rapidly evolving EV landscape.

Nissan’s New Silvia: A Glimmer of Hope for Sports Car Enthusiasts

Nissan has officially started working on a new version of the beloved Silvia sports car. This exciting news comes after over a decade of waiting and speculation since the Japanese automaker introduced the IDx concept, a retro-inspired sports coupe that could have joined the 370Z and GT-R in Nissan’s performance lineup. While the IDx never made it to production due to cost concerns and potential market cannibalization, Nissan's desire for a third sports car has not been abandoned. Now, it’s official: the Silvia is making a comeback. The new Silvia will almost certainly feature an electrified powertrain, which might dishearten purists who long for a gasoline-powered sports car. However, Nissan’s decision is driven by the increasingly stringent global emissions regulations, especially in regions like Europe. An all-gasoline Silvia would simply not be feasible in today’s regulatory environment. By embracing electrification, Nissan hopes to build a car that can be sold in as many markets as possible, achieving the economies of scale necessary to make such a niche vehicle viable.
