Polestar BST targets AMG and M with a bold electric performance push

22 Feb 2026
  • Why is Polestar challenging AMG and M in 2026?
  • What mechanical upgrades will define Polestar BST models in 2027?

Polestar is stepping into 2026 with a clear shift in attitude. The Swedish electric brand, born out of Volvo and backed by Geely, no longer wants to play the quiet premium role. Instead, it is openly aiming at German performance giants Mercedes AMG and BMW M. As the electric market moves beyond simple straight line speed, Polestar is building a sharper identity around track capability, dynamic control, and a new performance badge called BST, short for Beast.

A new performance identity

Polestar is no longer satisfied with being seen as a refined electric alternative. The brand has made it clear that driving excitement will become the core of its strategy moving forward. CEO Michael Lohscheller confirmed that future development will focus on sharper acceleration, stronger cornering performance, and a clear motorsport inspired identity. This shift positions Polestar directly against performance divisions like Mercedes AMG and BMW M, especially as both German brands prepare high output electric sedans and SUVs.

BST, which stands for Beast, was previously limited to special editions. Now Polestar plans to expand this badge across more of its lineup by 2027. That means BST will no longer be a niche experiment, it will represent the most extreme versions of future Polestar models. The upcoming successor to Polestar 2 is expected to play a central role in this strategy. Unlike the current model, the replacement will move away from the crossover style and focus more on a sporty sedan format, making it a natural rival to electric performance sedans from Germany.

At the top of the range, Polestar 5 is expected to receive a hardcore BST treatment aimed directly at track dominance. With Porsche Taycan currently seen as the benchmark for four door electric performance, Polestar wants to enter that territory with serious intent. Executives in Australia have also hinted that BST enhancements will expand to multiple global markets, building a layered performance hierarchy that can appeal to everyday drivers as well as serious enthusiasts.

Polestar understands that electric performance is no longer just about instant torque. To compete with AMG and M in the UAE and worldwide, the brand needs proper chassis tuning and mechanical upgrades. BST versions are expected to feature lower ride height and stiffer suspension setups to improve stability during high speed cornering. Historically, Polestar has been praised for precise handling, and these changes are designed to push that reputation even further.

Braking and tire performance will also receive major upgrades. Larger brake systems and high grip tires will be developed to manage the immense torque produced by electric motors. Unlike earlier special editions that focused heavily on cosmetic and chassis tweaks, 2026 expectations suggest that future BST variants will also deliver noticeable power increases. That means higher top speeds and quicker acceleration compared to standard models.

This performance shift comes at a crucial moment for the brand. In 2025, Polestar achieved record global sales of more than 60,000 units. However, it still needs to solidify its identity as a standalone performance brand rather than living in Volvo’s shadow. The company has launched its most aggressive product offensive to date, introducing four new models within three years. That wider product base provides the foundation for a dedicated performance sub brand under the BST label.

Industry analysts believe that focusing on driving purity and track credibility could be Polestar’s smartest move in a crowded and volatile electric market. As EV buyers become more selective, brands that offer a clear emotional appeal may stand out. For Polestar, betting on performance might not just be about challenging AMG and M, it could be the key to long term survival in the global electric arena.
