Porsche just gave car fans a showstopper by putting the legendary 918 Spyder face to face with the all new Cayenne Turbo Electric in a head to head drag race. This unique matchup brings together Porsche’s past and future, highlighting how quickly electric power is reshaping what performance means for sports cars and SUVs.
When the 918 Spyder launched in 2013, it set new standards for production car speed and technology. The hybrid system pairs a 4.6 liter V8 engine with two electric motors for a combined 887 horsepower. This setup rockets the 918 from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in just 2.6 seconds, and to two hundred in only 7.3 seconds, all while keeping the weight close to 1,674 kilograms. The 918 instantly joined the ranks of the world’s most exclusive hypercars and still stands as a symbol of innovation and hybrid excellence.
Porsche’s latest electric powerhouse, the Cayenne Turbo Electric, proves that the future really is now. Weighing in at an incredible 2,645 kilograms, this SUV still manages to outpace the 918 Spyder in a straight line sprint. It delivers an astounding 1,139 horsepower and launches from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in just 2.5 seconds, a tenth quicker than the legendary hybrid. However, once the speed builds, the lighter 918 regains its edge, hitting two hundred kilometers per hour just slightly faster.
This showdown, starring racing legend Mark Webber and Formula E star Gabriela Jilkova, ended in a symbolic tie. It underlines a big shift—instant torque and power from electric motors can rival and even surpass the wildest hypercars. Porsche’s Taycan Turbo GT remains the brand’s quickest accelerator at 2.2 seconds, but the Cayenne Turbo Electric now claims the title of most powerful Porsche ever built.
