Stellantis has officially decided to discontinue its plug in hybrid vehicle lineup for Chrysler and Jeep in North America, shifting focus to regular hybrids and new range extended technologies instead. This move brings an end to some of the most popular plug in hybrid SUVs on the market and signals a change in the company’s electrification roadmap.
The plug in hybrid versions of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe were once top sellers, with the Wrangler 4xe even holding the title of best selling plug in hybrid for several quarters. Despite their popularity, Stellantis has decided to phase out these models starting with the 2026 model year. The company has already removed plug in hybrid Jeep models from its vehicle configurator, making it clear that customers will soon have to look at other electrified choices.
This decision is a response to shifting customer demand and the company’s desire to stay competitive as regulations and buyer preferences evolve. Stellantis will now focus on offering new hybrid systems that don’t require a plug, like the recently launched turbocharged 1.6 liter hybrid engine in the 2026 Cherokee, which is paired with a two motor electronic transmission and a compact battery for extra efficiency.
The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid remains available for now, but its future looks uncertain as Stellantis confirmed that all plug in hybrid programs in North America will be phased out. Meanwhile, the Dodge Hornet plug in model has already seen its production paused due to tariff concerns.
Looking forward, Stellantis plans to expand its hybrid and battery electric vehicle offerings instead. The company has introduced new hybrid tech for the 2026 Cherokee and is moving ahead with the fully electric Jeep Recon. The shift is also tied to customer behavior, as many owners were not plugging in their vehicles as intended, a challenge recognized by several automakers. With this change, buyers can expect more conventional hybrids and range extended models in the future, rather than plug in options.
