The Renault R17: A Retro Concept Done Right

14 Sep 2024
  • How does the Renault R17 blend retro design with modern tech, and what are its key features?

Automakers have long had a penchant for nostalgia, often reviving vintage designs with modern twists that capture our hearts while leaving us wistful. The Renault R17 is a prime example of this trend—an exquisite concept car that marries the charm of the past with the innovation of the present. Unfortunately, despite its allure, Renault has no plans to bring the R17 to production. But let’s dive into what makes this concept so remarkable.

A Nod to the Past with a Modern Spin

A Nod to the Past with a Modern Spin

The Renault R17 reimagines the classic Renault 17, a hatchback that graced roads from 1971 to 1979. This new iteration, crafted in collaboration with French designer Ora Ïto, takes the nostalgic design and infuses it with a sleek, contemporary electric twist. The result is a strikingly beautiful vehicle that pays homage to its predecessor while offering a glimpse into the future of automotive design.

The R17 sports a carbon body, which not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also contributes to a lighter, more agile driving experience. Its proportions are spot-on, reminiscent of the original Renault 17 but with modern flair. The front of the car features rectangular LED headlights seamlessly integrated into the fascia, while the rear boasts a full-width LED taillight bar that complements the car’s clean lines.

One of the standout features of the R17 is its flared fenders, which give the car a more aggressive stance and a sportier appearance compared to the original model. Subtle louvers add a touch of retro flair, nodding to the design elements of the 1970s while maintaining a fresh, contemporary look.

Inside, Ora Ïto has masterfully blended materials and fabrics from the 1970s with modern technology. The cabin is a testament to retro sophistication, where screens are cleverly disguised to maintain the classic aesthetic. Four rectangular displays are positioned behind a rectangular steering wheel, while a central display sits horizontally below the dash, reminiscent of an old-school radio.

This design approach ensures that the cabin feels both nostalgic and innovative, providing a unique driving experience that honors the past while embracing the future.

Underneath the R17’s beautifully crafted exterior lies a 270-horsepower electric motor. This powertrain allows the concept car to travel 249 miles on a single charge, combining impressive performance with eco-friendly technology. It’s a testament to how modern engineering can enhance classic design principles.

Despite its stunning design and impressive specifications, the Renault R17 is destined to remain a concept. Renault has no plans to bring this electric restomod to production. The R17 will be a one-off showcase at various upcoming events, including the 2024 Paris Motor Show in October. It’s a bittersweet reminder of what could have been—a dazzling blend of retro aesthetics and modern technology that will only exist in our imaginations.

However, there’s still hope. If Hyundai can reconsider its stance on the N Vision 74, there’s a glimmer of possibility that Renault might also rethink the R17’s future. For now, we’ll have to admire this masterpiece from afar and dream of what could have been.

Nissan’s New Silvia: A Glimmer of Hope for Sports Car Enthusiasts

Nissan has officially started working on a new version of the beloved Silvia sports car. This exciting news comes after over a decade of waiting and speculation since the Japanese automaker introduced the IDx concept, a retro-inspired sports coupe that could have joined the 370Z and GT-R in Nissan’s performance lineup. While the IDx never made it to production due to cost concerns and potential market cannibalization, Nissan's desire for a third sports car has not been abandoned. Now, it’s official: the Silvia is making a comeback. The new Silvia will almost certainly feature an electrified powertrain, which might dishearten purists who long for a gasoline-powered sports car. However, Nissan’s decision is driven by the increasingly stringent global emissions regulations, especially in regions like Europe. An all-gasoline Silvia would simply not be feasible in today’s regulatory environment. By embracing electrification, Nissan hopes to build a car that can be sold in as many markets as possible, achieving the economies of scale necessary to make such a niche vehicle viable.
