Volkswagen is making significant strides in the electric vehicle market, particularly in Europe, with a focus on affordability and accessibility. The latest development in this strategy is the Volkswagen ID.1, a compact electric hatchback set to debut in 2027 with a projected starting price of €19,500 ($21,000). Following the launch of the ID.2 in 2026, the ID.1 will cater to urban drivers seeking an entry-level EV with practical range and modern technology.
Volkswagen recently teased the ID.1 at an event in Wolfsburg, Germany, offering a glimpse of its compact yet futuristic design. The teaser image highlights a sleek front fascia featuring a narrow LED light strip running across the front, an illuminated VW badge, and unique "winking" LED headlights that give the car a playful character. The gloss-black panel on the front bumper adds a premium touch, while vertical LED running lights enhance its visual appeal.
While full specifications remain under wraps, Volkswagen is expected to unveil a concept version of the ID.1 in March 2024, providing more insights into its dimensions, battery options, and driving range. The production model will likely follow the ID.2 in adopting a front-wheel-drive layout based on an updated MEB platform, ensuring efficiency and practicality for city driving.
The ID.1 is part of Volkswagen’s broader plan to expand its electric lineup, targeting budget-conscious buyers in Europe. It will be positioned below the ID.2, which is expected to launch in 2026 with a price of approximately €24,000 ($26,000). Both models aim to democratize EV ownership by providing affordable alternatives to traditional combustion-engine cars.
Volkswagen has also hinted at a performance-oriented ID.GTI, inspired by the ID.2all concept, bringing a sporty edge to its electric portfolio. Additionally, the company plans to introduce an electric version of the Golf, which could serve as a successor to the ID.3—a compact EV that has sold over 500,000 units since 2019.
While Volkswagen has struggled to expand its EV offerings in North America, its ID lineup has gained significant traction in Europe, selling over 1.35 million units globally. With plans to introduce nine new EV models by 2027, Volkswagen is solidifying its position as a leader in affordable electric mobility, even if models like the ID.1 and ID.2 remain exclusive to the European market.
