Volkswagen has introduced significant changes to its ID.4 lineup for 2025, reshaping its entry-level offering and refining its higher-end trims. As the automotive industry moves toward a more mature electric vehicle market, VW has opted to discontinue the base model, leaving customers with a more premium starting option. However, an affordable variant is expected to make a return later in the year.
The most notable adjustment for 2025 is the absence of the entry-level ID.4 Standard model, which previously featured a 62 kWh battery. This means the lineup now begins with the ID.4 Pro, equipped with a larger 82 kWh battery that offers extended range and improved performance. This shift effectively raises the starting point for prospective buyers, positioning the ID.4 as a more refined and feature-rich EV from the outset.
Volkswagen’s decision follows a challenging year for the ID.4, as production setbacks and sales pauses impacted the model's momentum. While the discontinuation of the base model may initially seem like a drawback, the larger battery pack ensures longer driving distances and a more competitive offering in the expanding EV market.
Despite removing the base model, Volkswagen has confirmed that an entry-level 62 kWh version of the ID.4 will be introduced later in 2025. This variant is expected to offer a more accessible price point for customers seeking an electric SUV without the premium features of the Pro models.
VW has yet to disclose the exact specifications or expected price for this upcoming model. However, given the previous performance of the 62 kWh variant, it will likely cater to urban commuters and drivers who prioritize affordability over maximum range. This reintroduction suggests that Volkswagen remains committed to offering multiple choices in the ID.4 lineup to meet varying customer needs.
With the larger 82 kWh battery, the ID.4 Pro now delivers up to 468 km on a single charge with rear-wheel drive, a significant improvement over the previous entry-level model, which maxed out at 331 km. The all-wheel drive variant offers 423 km, providing additional traction and stability for diverse driving conditions.
Higher in the lineup, Volkswagen has introduced the ID.4 Pro S Plus, featuring 21-inch wheels, a black roof, silver exterior accents, and power-folding mirrors with integrated lighting. Inside, drivers will find heated rear seats, a premium 14-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, three-zone climate control, and a 360-degree overhead camera system. This marks a step toward greater luxury and advanced technology, positioning the ID.4 as a premium contender in the EV segment.
With these changes, Volkswagen continues to refine its approach to electric mobility, focusing on range, technology, and performance rather than purely entry-level pricing. As the year progresses, the return of the 62 kWh model will bring back an option for budget-conscious buyers while maintaining the brand’s commitment to advanced electric vehicle development.
