The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has tightened its safety standards for 2025, and the results were staggering: only one midsize luxury sedan made it through the crash test chaos with its Top Safety Pick+ badge intact. Amid tougher crash simulations and a new emphasis on nighttime pedestrian detection, the 2025 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the only luxury midsize sedan to meet the mark. While the rest of the segment stumbled under the pressure of the updated tests, the C-Class proved its engineering mettle.
Mercedes-Benz's C-Class didn’t just pass the 2025 IIHS evaluations; it dominated. From front and side crashes to the newly upgraded rear-seat safety checks, the C-Class scored “Good” ratings across the board. Notably, it excelled in the revised moderate overlap front crash test, a section where most competitors failed to cut.
Adding to its triumph, the C-Class showcased strong performance in pedestrian safety. IIHS testing found its optional Active Brake Assist system with Cross-Traffic Function successfully avoided collisions during nighttime pedestrian scenarios, an increasingly critical part of modern safety assessments. Even its lighting systems held up, with standard headlights scoring “Good” and premium trims receiving an “Acceptable” rating.
Although some reviewers noted areas for improvement in driving dynamics, such as a vague brake feel and a firm ride, the C-Class now stands alone in its class as the only luxury midsize sedan to receive the 2025 Top Safety Pick+ award. In a year where safety expectations climbed sharply, Mercedes-Benz didn’t just meet the challenge, it raised the bar.
