What if your car simply refused to let you speed? That’s the vision behind a new bill aiming to use GPS based speed limiters to stop repeat reckless drivers. The proposed law would require those with multiple violations to install intelligent speed assistance systems that make it physically impossible to exceed posted speed limits. While some see it as a bold step toward safer roads, others question whether the tech can really change dangerous habits.
The system works a lot like a breathalyzer lock for drunk drivers. Called intelligent speed assistance, or ISA, it uses GPS data to track the posted speed limit on any given road. If the driver tries to exceed that limit, the system intervenes, capping the car’s speed automatically.
In the new proposal, anyone convicted of reckless driving twice in five years would be required to install one of these devices. Even going 32 kilometers per hour over the limit would qualify. The device costs around 1,700 dollars and must be paid for by the driver. Tampering with or removing the limiter could lead to jail time or a hefty fine.
Supporters of the bill argue that ISA tech sends a strong message and prevents repeat offenses by removing the option to speed. One lawmaker said the system helps drivers understand the consequences and reminds everyone in the car why it's installed.
But critics are skeptical. They point out that people might just switch to another car without the limiter or find ways to disable the tech. Others worry that reckless driving includes more than just speeding, like weaving through traffic or running red lights, which the device cannot stop.
Still, this idea is not unique. Similar efforts are underway in states like Virginia and Washington, with more regions likely to consider the move if early results show promise. Whether or not the law passes, it’s clear that technology is becoming a bigger part of how governments are trying to shape safer roads.
