ZF LIFETEC Rearranges Driver Airbag on the Steering Wheel, Creating Design Freedom

12 Jun 2024
  • How does ZF LIFETEC's new steering wheel design improve safety and functionality compared to traditional designs with a frontal airbag deployment from the center?

In the ever-evolving landscape of automotive design, the steering wheel remains a central element of innovation, particularly within digital interior concepts. ZF LIFETEC has taken a significant step forward by reimagining the traditional placement of the driver airbag, thus unlocking unprecedented design possibilities for the steering wheel and its controls. This novel approach promises to revolutionize the aesthetic and functional dynamics of modern car interiors.

A New Era for Steering Wheels

A New Era for Steering Wheels

Since the introduction of driver airbags in the 1980s, their presence in the center of the steering wheel hub has been a constant, serving as both a safety feature and a crucial interface between driver and vehicle. For over three decades, this design has not only provided vital protection during accidents but has also evolved into a command center for various entertainment and assistance functions. ZF LIFETEC's innovative steering wheel concept aims to expand these design horizons even further.

Traditionally, the driver airbag deploys frontally from the center of the steering wheel. However, ZF LIFETEC's new design sees the airbag deploying from the top side of the steering wheel, through the upper rim towards the driver. This repositioning frees up the horizontal spoke and hub area, allowing for a seamless, smartphone-like design. Integrating force-sensitive controls behind a continuous surface, this design melds perfectly with the sleek, digital dashboards of modern vehicles.

The new steering wheel concept from ZF LIFETEC prioritizes both design and functionality. The seamless surface can accommodate freely assignable fields, enabling the integration of customizable touch displays or hybrid solutions. For instance, a combination of rotary switches with force-sensitive, tactile surfaces can serve as anchor points, allowing for intuitive and safe operation of the vehicle's systems.

Safety remains paramount, with the integration of hands-on detection technology. A capacitive sensor beneath the leather surface detects whether the driver is merely touching or securely gripping the wheel, ensuring safe vehicle control. This technology is a critical component of current and future steering wheel designs, further enhancing the safety and functionality of the vehicle.

“With this new concept, we are enabling design freedom for steering wheels without compromising safety,” explains Harald Lutz, Head of Development at ZF LIFETEC. This forward-thinking approach highlights ZF LIFETEC's commitment to innovation, blending cutting-edge design with essential safety features.

As the automotive industry continues to advance, the steering wheel will remain a focal point of innovation. ZF LIFETEC's redesigned airbag deployment and seamless control integration represent a significant leap forward, paving the way for more sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing vehicle interiors. This new generation of steering wheels not only enhances the driver's experience but also sets a new standard for the future of automotive design.
