If you are leaving the United Arab Emirates for good or you have already relocated and your car is still parked back home, you might wonder if you can sell your car without returning in person. Thanks to clear regulations and modern digital services, it is now completely possible to sell your car in the United Arab Emirates from overseas using a trusted representative and a power of attorney. Here is what every car owner should know about this process.
To sell your car in the United Arab Emirates while you are abroad, the most important step is granting an official power of attorney to a trusted person or company. This legal document gives your representative the right to handle the entire sale process, from negotiating with buyers to signing paperwork and collecting payment. They can also handle registration renewals, insurance, fines, and dealings with government offices.
To set up a power of attorney, you need to prepare your passport and Emirates ID (both original and copies), as well as your car registration card. The document must clearly state the authority to sell, transfer ownership, and, if needed, export the car outside the United Arab Emirates. If you are inside the country, a notary public will handle the authentication. If you are abroad, your country’s foreign ministry and the UAE embassy must both verify it. All power of attorney documents must be written in Arabic or have a certified Arabic translation to meet UAE legal standards.
Costs for drafting and notarizing the power of attorney start from about 549 dirhams and can take five to eight working days to complete.
Once your power of attorney is in place, your appointed representative can handle the rest of the process without you ever needing to fly back. The first step is clearing any outstanding loans with the bank and making sure all fines are paid through online police or traffic portals. The car must then pass a technical inspection with the RTA or other official center. If anything needs repair, it must be fixed before the sale.
Your agent will need to show a valid Emirates ID, the official power of attorney, and a recent inspection certificate at the time of sale. Insurance policies with more than seven months left can usually be transferred to the new owner, or you can cancel the policy and get a refund if needed. After all these steps, your representative can legally transfer ownership to the buyer.
Extra tips: Use official platforms like Dubai Cars or agency buyback programs for a smoother experience. If a sale takes longer, consider secure car storage to avoid fines or damage. Always check that every document is authentic using RTA’s online tools. For cars being exported, your agent can arrange to cancel the UAE registration and secure export papers.
By following these steps, car owners in the United Arab Emirates can sell their vehicles from anywhere in the world, with peace of mind that everything is done legally and efficiently.
