World Premiere at CES: Volkswagen Integrates ChatGPT into its vehicles

  • What are the advantages of the integration of ChatGPT into Volkswagen models?

At CES 2024, Volkswagen takes a giant leap into the future by unveiling the integration of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based chatbot, into its IDA voice assistant. This groundbreaking integration is set to redefine the in-car experience, offering users seamless access to a continually expanding artificial intelligence database while driving. Volkswagen, in collaboration with technology partner Cerence Inc., introduces Cerence Chat Pro as the foundation for this innovative feature, making it the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature in many production vehicles starting from the second quarter of 2024.

The integration of ChatGPT into the IDA voice assistant is part of the latest generation of infotainment in various Volkswagen models, including the ID.702, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Passat, and the new Golf03. Cerence Chat Pro facilitates this integration, providing a host of capabilities that extend beyond traditional voice control. The IDA voice assistant, powered by ChatGPT, can now manage infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and even answer general knowledge questions. This marks a significant step towards a future where artificial intelligence in vehicles provides rich and interactive experiences for drivers.

One of the key advantages of this integration is the ability to engage in hands-free, voice-activated conversations during car journeys. The AI-powered assistant can enhance communication, provide answers to queries, and offer vehicle-specific information, all without requiring the driver to divert their attention from the road.

Importantly, the driver experience remains unchanged. There's no need to create new accounts, install additional apps, or activate ChatGPT separately. The IDA voice assistant is effortlessly activated by a simple "Hello IDA" or a press of the steering wheel button. The system prioritizes requests, ensuring that vehicle functions, destination searches, or temperature adjustments are handled seamlessly. If a question exceeds the capabilities of the Volkswagen system, it is forwarded anonymously to AI, and the familiar Volkswagen voice responds.

Crucially, user data privacy is a top priority. ChatGPT does not access any vehicle data, and questions and answers are promptly deleted to ensure the highest level of data protection. Cerence Chat Pro plays a vital role in maintaining this security by utilizing various sources, including ChatGPT, to provide accurate and relevant responses.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, emphasizes Volkswagen's commitment to democratizing technology. "Thanks to the seamless integration of ChatGPT and strong collaboration with our partner, Cerence, we are offering our drivers added value and direct access to the AI-based research tool. This also underlines the innovative strength of our new products."

Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, expresses pride in the long-standing partnership with Volkswagen, stating, "With Cerence Chat Pro, VW is empowered with an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration that offers unmatched flexibility, customization, and ease of deployment, while prioritizing security and usability for drivers."
