The Highway Assistant is an extension of the Steering and Lane Control Assistant and is optimized for use on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. One of its standout capabilities is the Active Lane Change Assistant, which enables the vehicle to autonomously perform lane changes without the driver needing to touch the steering wheel. Drivers can initiate these lane changes by simply looking at the exterior mirror to confirm the maneuver, adding a layer of intuitive control to the driving experience.

Taking automation a step further, the BMW Personal Pilot L3 system introduces highly automated Level 3 driving. This system allows drivers to completely delegate the task of driving to the vehicle under specific conditions, such as during traffic jams on the motorway, at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph). With Personal Pilot L3 activated, drivers can take their hands off the wheel and divert their attention away from the road, engaging in other in-car activities like making phone calls, reading, or streaming videos.
