Few vehicles stir the enthusiast pot like the BMW M5. After a lengthy buildup, the company's latest super sedan is finally here. The new 2025 M5 is the most powerful model to ever wear the iconic badge, boasting incredible performance. However, it also holds the title of the heaviest M5 of all time, weighing over 2.5 tons, primarily due to its standard hybrid powertrain.

Performance and Powertrain

Performance and Powertrain

As expected, there's XM DNA under the skin, namely the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine paired with a single electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. This combination delivers a total system output of 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, slightly less than the XM Label. The engine alone produces 577 hp, while the electric motor adds 194 hp, identical to what you find in the XM. The hybrid battery, however, is smaller, with a capacity of 14.8 kWh.

BMW claims that the new M5 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. The top speed is limited to 155 mph, but this can be increased to 190 mph with the M Driver's Package. Alongside this impressive speed, the hybrid powertrain allows for quiet, electric-only operation, providing up to 25 miles of silent range solely on battery power. When you engage the throttle or manually shift the M Steptronic transmission, the car's engine roars to life, ready to deliver maximum performance.

The 2025 M5 offers three standard driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. In Comfort mode, the gasoline and electric systems work together to provide a smooth and efficient journey, with the gas engine shutting off frequently and the suspension and transmission settings kept in their least intrusive configurations. Sport and Sport Plus modes keep the engine running constantly, with the optional Dynamic and Dynamic Plus settings needed for the full M5 experience. These modes optimize the powertrain for maximum power and enhance the cooling system for track duty.

The Dynamic mode also allows you to switch the xDrive all-wheel-drive system to rear-wheel drive. Alternatively, you can achieve this by turning off the stability control, offering drivers an "even more unfiltered performance experience," according to BMW. An electronically controlled differential lock in the rear can send power left or right as needed, functioning similarly to a stability control system but using power instead of brakes to maintain control. This results in faster cornering with greater confidence, aided further by the active rear steering that turns up to 1.5 degrees.

To bring the M5 to a stop, six-piston calipers on 16.1-inch discs are used in the front, with single-piston floating calipers and 15.7-inch discs at the back. Optional M Carbon ceramic brakes increase the front disc size to 16.5 inches and reduce weight by 55 pounds. These brakes are housed behind staggered wheels, measuring 20 inches in the front and 21 inches in the back.

The M5's bespoke driveline setup goes beyond the stiffer 5-Series springs. The five-link rear axle is model-specific, featuring strengthened control arms, camber control arms, and guide arms designed for higher g loading. The double-wishbone front axle is more rigid, with M5-specific hubs. Additional bracing for the strut towers, underfloor bracing, and stronger mounts for various chassis components ensure enhanced structural integrity. BMW's Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers is standard, allowing drivers to fine-tune the suspension to their liking.

Technology and Interior

The 2025 M5 comes equipped with BMW's 8.5 operating system, featuring M-specific displays for the driver and front-seat passengers. A heads-up display is standard, and for those moments when you prefer not to drive, you can stream videos or play a selection of AirConsole games. The interior also allows individual settings for the suspension, brakes, steering, transmission, and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Exterior Design

Exterior Design

Visually, the M5 is unmistakable with its quad exhaust tips at the back. It is also slightly wider—3.0 inches in the front and 1.9 inches at the back. BMW has redesigned the sides of the M5 compared to the 5 Series to give it a more aggressive stance. The front fascia features an array of vents and contrasting angles, while a subtle lip spoiler adds character to the rear. Nine standard colors are available at launch, but buyers can also choose from numerous BMW Individual shades for a unique look.

The 2025 BMW M5 weighs 5,390 pounds, which is more than a Ford F-150 with a four-door cab and four-wheel drive. Despite this, early test drives on the track have shown that the weight does not negatively impact its performance. However, how this weight will affect everyday use remains to be seen.

The 2025 BMW M5 has a starting price of $120,675, with deliveries expected to begin later this year. Enthusiasts can decide for themselves if the heaviest M5 ever is still a driver's delight. Stay tuned for more in-depth reviews as we spend more time behind the wheel of this impressive super sedan.
