Audi is about to make history with its official entry into Formula 1 in 2026. After years of development and a key partnership with Sauber, the German brand revealed the R26 concept, its very first Formula 1 car. Audi’s arrival comes with a striking new design language, advanced hybrid power, and a lineup set to shake up the grid.
Audi has given the R26 a visual identity unlike any other team in Formula 1. The car features a three color scheme of titanium, carbon black, and a special new Audi red. For the first time ever, the iconic Audi rings appear in red, setting a tone that will soon spread to production cars and the racing team alike. The R26’s body is sculpted from carbon fiber and designed for extreme aerodynamics, giving it an aggressive, race ready look that signals Audi’s ambitions go far beyond just joining the field.
Audi’s new F1 car uses a cutting edge 1.6 liter V6 turbo hybrid engine with advanced energy recovery (MGU-H and MGU-K) and a fully in house developed transmission. Leading this project are two well known F1 figures, Mattia Binotto (former Ferrari boss) and Jonathan Wheatley (ex Red Bull sporting director). Their combined Italian, British, and German experience is aimed at building a car that can compete with the best from the very first season.
Audi’s F1 lineup will include Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, who will keep their seats as Sauber transitions to the Audi name. The R26 will make its first public appearance in Bahrain’s pre season tests in February 2026, followed by its race debut at the Australian Grand Prix in March. Audi’s leadership has made it clear they are not just here to participate, but to aim for the podium and, eventually, the world title as new rules shake up the grid.
