Japan's New Mirror Film Could Change Rainy Day Driving Forever

  • How does Car Mate's Zero Wiper film work?
  • Why is this mirror film better than sprays?

Getting stuck in traffic while rain splashes across your side mirrors is something every driver in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf can relate to. The reduced visibility, especially on highways, can be annoying and dangerous. Now, a new product from Japanese company Car Mate might just solve this everyday frustration. Their transparent water repellent film for side mirrors is making waves at the upcoming CES tech show in the US. Simple to install and inspired by nature, this mirror film could soon become an essential car upgrade for anyone tired of blurred side views when it rains.

A Smarter Fix for Rainy Mirrors

A Smarter Fix for Rainy Mirrors

Car Mate's Zero Wiper Film-Type Side Mirror is a transparent sticker that you place directly on your car’s side mirrors. Once applied, it creates a slick, water repelling surface that pushes raindrops off quickly. No more droplets lingering on the mirror. The result? Clear rear and side views even in the middle of a downpour.

This isn't just a gimmick. The film was first shown at the Japan Mobility Show back in 2023, and it’s already available in Japan. Its debut in the United States at CES means it could soon hit international markets. What sets it apart from temporary spray-on water repellents is that it lasts longer, stands up to car washes, and stays in place.

The technology behind the Zero Wiper film mimics the lotus leaf. That means water droplets don’t stick but roll off instantly thanks to the film's tiny micro-textures. Known as the hydrophobic effect, this natural principle keeps the mirror surface dry and visible.

What’s great is that the film fits most car mirrors without needing any specific model compatibility. However, since it doesn’t cover the full edge of the mirror, some users might notice a small visible frame left around the edges. For drivers who care more about performance than aesthetics, this is a small price to pay for better visibility and safety during rainy conditions.
