With the Arena Cross World Tour making its highly anticipated stop in Abu Dhabi, the global motocross spotlight is turning to the UAE like never before. It’s more than just a race; it’s a new era for off-road motorsport in the region. And who better to speak with than Mohammed Al Balooshi, a name that needs no introduction in the motocross and rally world.
As a Motocross World Champion, Dakar Rally veteran, and founder of the MX Academy, Al Balooshi has spent over two decades not just racing but shaping the future of the sport in the Middle East. From riding through the vast Emirati deserts as a kid to carrying the UAE flag on global stages, he has built a career defined by grit, legacy, and an unwavering passion for two wheels.
In this exclusive interview with Motor283, Al Balooshi reflects on what the Arena Cross World Tour means for the region, how motocross reflects the spirit of the UAE, and what the future holds for young riders across the Gulf.
Motor 283: Mohamed, you are a Motocross World Champion, Dakar Racer, and a name that always comes up in any motocross conversation, my first question is: how would you define your passion for motocross?
Mohammed Al Balooshi: Motocross has never been just a sport to me, it is a defining part of who I am. Growing up in the UAE, surrounded by the vast expanse of desert, riding quickly became second nature. From an early age, I was inspired by national icons such as Mohammed Ben Sulayem. While his path led him to cars and mine to bikes, our shared goal remained the same: to represent the UAE with pride. After 25 years in the sport, that passion continues to burn brighter than ever. Motocross has instilled in me purpose and discipline and given me a platform through which I have been able to raise our flag on the global stage.
Motor 283: Motocross is a growing motorsport in the region, and there’s increasing global interest being placed on the Middle East and the UAE. Why do you think that is?
Mohammed Al Balooshi: The region, particularly the UAE, offers something uniquely compelling: some of the most breathtaking desert landscapes in the world. These natural terrains serve as an ideal playground for off-road motorsport, perfectly suited to the demands of motocross.
But beyond the physical setting, there is a deep-rooted culture of automotive enthusiasm; our people are petrolheads at heart, driven by a shared love for bikes, cars, and the rush of adrenaline. While the passion has always existed, what we are now seeing is the emergence of platforms, investment, and a long-term vision that is elevating the sport to a global level. This, in turn, is successfully capturing the world’s attention.
Motor 283: Let’s talk about major events, starting with the upcoming Arenacross World Tour. Why is this a major milestone for motocross in the UAE and the wider region?
Mohammed Al Balooshi: The arrival of the Arenacross World Tour in Abu Dhabi marks a truly historic milestone. For the first time, we will see the world’s best riders in this specific format compete on our soil. While we have previously hosted supercross and various off-road events, Arenacross introduces an entirely new level of spectacle, professionalism, and competitive intensity. It draws global attention, introduces new audiences to the sport, and provides a platform for local talent to shine. For me personally, this moment feels like the culmination of years of dedication, and the start of something even greater.
Motor 283: Arenacross isn’t just an incredible show, it’s also a competitive championship with top-tier riders, and it gives young riders the chance to make their first public appearance. Why does Arenacross matter so much to the next generation?
Mohammed Al Balooshi: Arenacross brings hope and a clear goal for the next generation of riders. It creates visibility, inspiration, and a tangible path forward. For many years, motocross in the region was driven purely by passion with riders coming together for the love of the sport, often without formal opportunities to grow.
Today, that landscape is shifting. Arenacross gives aspiring riders access to a world-class, structured, and safe competitive environment, while also allowing them to witness elite athletes perform at the highest level. For a young rider, that experience can be transformative. It sends a clear message: this is not just a hobby, but a real career path; one with purpose, possibility, and a future.
Motor 283: What does it mean to see the Middle East—particularly the UAE—host such a major global event and be part of the story from the inside?
Mohammed Al Balooshi: It is a source of immense pride. I have watched motocross evolve here over decades, from informal desert races to fully sanctioned international championships. To now see the UAE positioned not only as a host, but as a key player in shaping the future of the sport, is incredibly meaningful. As an Emirati who has spent a lifetime in motocross, being part of that evolution is both humbling and deeply fulfilling.
Motor 283: How do motocross and Arenacross reflect the UAE’s spirit of risk, ambition, and spectacle—and why do you think this sport feels so at home in this setting?
Mohammed Al Balooshi: Motocross is, at its core, about defying limits. It demands bravery, ambition, and a relentless desire to push forward – all qualities that mirror the very ethos of the UAE. This is a country built on bold visions and fearless execution. Much like motocross, we do not shy away from challenges but rise to them. This is why the sport feels so natural here; it resonates with the rhythm of our people and the character of our nation.
Motor 283: And finally, what was your role in this major event? What does the future of motocross in the UAE look like—and what can you promise young riders coming up in the sport?
Mohammed Al Balooshi: I have always seen my role as that of a bridge, connecting past and future, local talent and the global stage. Whether through my work at MX Academy, mentoring the next generation, or supporting initiatives behind the scenes, my aim has always been to elevate the sport and those within it.
To the young riders of the UAE, I say this: the future is bright. What we are witnessing now is just the beginning. The foundations have been laid, the spotlight is on, and your moment is coming. The world is ready to watch, and you must be ready to rise.
