Ferrari Launches the 849 Testarossa with 1050 Horsepower

  • How powerful is the new V8 hybrid setup in the 849 Testarossa?
  • How did Ferrari improve the aerodynamics and cooling in the 849 Testarossa?
  • What kind of handling and interior experience does the Ferrari 849 Testarossa offer?

Ferrari has officially revealed its most extreme hybrid V8 supercar to date, the all new 849 Testarossa. This new model arrives as the successor to the SF90 Stradale and brings with it a major leap in performance and technology. Alongside the coupe comes the 849 Testarossa Spider, offering the same specs with the thrill of open top driving.

Under the sleek carbon fiber body lies a plug in hybrid powertrain that combines a twin turbo V8 producing 830 horsepower with three electric motors that add another 220 horsepower. That brings total output to 1050 horsepower, the highest figure ever achieved by a Ferrari road car.

The name Testarossa isn’t new to Ferrari fans. It first appeared in 1956 on the 500 TR, referencing the red cam covers of the engine, and later returned on the iconic 1984 Testarossa. Now, Ferrari revives the name for a model that blends tradition with new hybrid performance.

Powertrain and Hybrid System Highlights

At the heart of the 849 Testarossa is a fully reworked version of Ferrari’s award winning 3.9 liter twin turbo V8 engine. It now delivers 830 horsepower thanks to a new turbo, redesigned cylinder heads, a lighter engine block, and motorsport inspired upgrades like titanium bolts and F80 derived cooling elements.

The hybrid system adds another 220 horsepower using three electric motors. Two sit on the front axle enabling torque vectoring and electric all wheel drive, while the third is integrated into the rear powertrain. This layout allows the car to operate in multiple modes, including a pure electric drive of up to 25 kilometers using a 7.45 kWh battery.

Ferrari’s engineers managed to deliver this power increase without adding weight compared to the outgoing SF90. Extensive use of lightweight components and recycled aluminum allowed for a better power to weight ratio than any Ferrari range car before it. The result is improved acceleration, sharper handling, and better efficiency in all driving conditions.

Aerodynamic Mastery and Lightweight Design

Aerodynamic Mastery and Lightweight Design

Ferrari designed the 849 Testarossa to deliver high downforce, optimal cooling, and low drag, all while preserving an aggressive, futuristic look. Drawing inspiration from legendary sports prototypes of the 1970s and models like the 512 S and FXX-K, the new design is not just artistic, it is highly functional.

At 250 kilometers per hour, the car generates 415 kilograms of downforce, which is 25 kilograms more than the SF90 Stradale. This was made possible through several upgrades, including a completely redesigned front underbody with new vortex generators, a concave roof that guides airflow toward the active rear spoiler, and reworked side channels that boost airflow to the intercoolers by 30 percent.

The rear end is particularly eye catching, with a twin tail setup that incorporates a pair of aerodynamic wings working alongside a lightweight, retractable spoiler. This active spoiler shifts between low drag and high downforce positions in less than a second, adding up to 100 kilograms of rear downforce when needed. A multilevel diffuser and oversized vortex generators at the rear improve ground effect and airflow expansion, reducing drag while keeping grip consistent.

Cooling improvements are just as critical. Enlarged radiator openings, asymmetrical front geometry, and new vent placements increase thermal management by 15 percent. The brake cooling system was also upgraded, with a 70 percent airflow improvement to the rear calipers and a 15 percent boost at the front. These changes help the car stay sharp even during long track sessions or repeated high speed braking.

Thanks to these combined aerodynamic and thermal innovations, the 849 Testarossa is able to push harder for longer, while maintaining a sculpted profile that communicates performance from every angle.

Track Focused Dynamics and an Immersive Cockpit

Track Focused Dynamics and an Immersive Cockpit

Ferrari engineered the 849 Testarossa to offer razor sharp control and consistent driving performance, even under extreme conditions. At its core is the updated Ferrari Integrated Vehicle Estimator (FIVE), a new system that builds a digital twin of the car in real time. It reads acceleration, yaw, and cornering data to fine tune how the electronic differential, torque vectoring, and traction control behave. The result is a car that responds instantly and predictably, even at the limit.

Paired with this tech is a newly tuned suspension system that reduces body roll by 10 percent while boosting lateral grip by 3 percent. The car also gets revised ABS Evo braking, larger discs, and a stronger pedal feel. Ferrari’s brake by wire system is now more progressive and natural, with smoother blending between hydraulic and regenerative braking. Gear shifts feel quicker too, thanks to updated logic and pressure tuning inherited from the SF90 XX Stradale.

The cockpit takes cues from both single seat race cars and luxury grand tourers. The redesigned dashboard floats across the cabin, separated by a sleek horizontal contrast band that integrates key controls and a passenger screen. A new steering wheel merges digital cluster functionality with mechanical controls like the Engine Start button and eManettino drive mode switch.

Ferrari has also improved ergonomics, giving the cabin more usable space with thinner door panels and a reworked central tunnel. Seat options include sculpted comfort seats or carbon fiber racing shells with deep side bolsters. Materials like Alcantara, aluminum, and carbon fiber surround the driver, while features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and MyFerrari Connect app integration round out the tech suite.

For buyers craving even more performance, the optional Assetto Fiorano pack adds 30 kilograms of weight savings, larger front flicks, carbon fiber wheels, racing shocks, and optional Michelin Cup2R tires. It also includes exclusive dual tone liveries and additional downforce elements that triple rear grip compared to the standard tail setup.

The Ferrari 849 Testarossa marks a bold evolution in hybrid supercars, proving that extreme power, cutting edge design, and advanced dynamics can exist in a single, driver focused machine.
