Mazda Rotary Engine Team Returns with Ambitious Plans

07 Feb 2024

Mazda has officially revived its dedicated Rotary Engine Development Group, comprised of 36 engineers, signaling a renewed commitment to the iconic rotary engine technology. Last year, Mazda reintroduced the rotary engine in the MX-30 crossover, utilizing it as a range extender. In 2023, the company showcased the impressive Iconic SP Concept, featuring a rotary engine functioning as a generator to charge the battery. Now, with the establishment of the "RE Development Group," Mazda aims to push the boundaries of this high-revving technology once again.

The Return of the Rotary

The Return of the Rotary

The last time Mazda had a specialized team for rotary engines was in 2018, and enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating the return of this team ever since the discontinuation of the JDM-exclusive RX-8 Spirit R in 2012. While Mazda refrains from promising a new rotary performance vehicle, the company expresses its dedication to delivering "attractive cars that excite customers with our challenger spirit."

One of the highlights of Mazda's recent endeavors is the stunning Iconic SP Concept, where the rotary engine serves as a generator. This innovative approach allows the vehicle to run on gasoline, hydrogen, or renewable fuels. The two-rotor engine in the Iconic SP Concept delivers 365 horsepower, creating a sports car that weighs 3,197 pounds, with a perfect weight distribution between the axles.

During the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, Mazda's President and CEO, Katsuhiro Moro, hinted at the possibility of a spiritual successor to the RX-7/RX-8. However, the press release emphasizes that any potential production model will use the rotary engine exclusively as a generator, not for directly driving the wheels, as seen in past RX models.

While there is no explicit promise of a new rotary sports car, the establishment of the RE Development Group raises hopes among enthusiasts. The press release suggests a focus on developing "attractive cars that excite customers," leaving room for speculation about a potential production version of the Iconic SP or a new iteration of the RX series. However, Mazda emphasizes that any new development is at least a couple of years away.

Mazda's decision to revive the Rotary Engine Development Group is a clear indication of the company's long-term commitment to rotary engine technology. The Iconic SP Concept serves as a promising glimpse into the potential future of rotary engines, with a focus on innovative applications such as electricity generation. Enthusiasts will eagerly await further developments from Mazda, hoping for the revival of iconic sports cars with the unmistakable rotary engine roar.
